Siuntio combines Finnish history with nature and outdoor activities: a medieval stone church, several historic residences, museums and the Kopparnäs–Störsvik recreation and nature reserve give your trip a variety of highlights. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether you mainly want to explore culture, spend time outdoors or include both in your stay. The sights and trails offer a range of themes, and not all activities involve the same kind of outing.

Cultural history in churches, manor houses and museums

According to recent research, the grey stone Church of St. Peter was completed around 1480. Its star vault and ceiling paintings were added in the early 16th century. If you are interested in medieval church architecture and historic painting, you will find two features here that date from different periods: the construction of the church interior and its later decoration.

The history of Fanjunkars is also linked to a well-known Finnish figure: Aleksis Kivi lived there from 1864 to 1871. The museum room contains objects from the old Fanjunkars as well as personal belongings of the writer. Fanjunkars is centrally located in the village centre of Siuntio. The local history museum in the church village, on the slope of Krejansberget, comprises seven buildings and adds several historic structures to the picture of local history.

Suitia offers a different focus. In the 1540s, Erik Fleming had a stone manor house built in the Kirkkojoki valley as the main building of his later estate. Suitia Castle stands in the church village on a small field hill among deciduous trees. Sjundby Castle, built around 1560, was the home of the artist Helene Schjerfbeck’s grandmother. If you would like to compare different eras and stories, you can add the Gårdskulla Agricultural Museum to your itinerary: its collection includes thousands of agricultural museum objects and machines, including tractors.

Nature area, lakeshore and trails

Kopparnäs–Störsvik includes Störsvik in Siuntio and is managed as a single recreation and nature reserve. Its defining landscapes include the old forests in the interior of Störsvik, Lake Kvarnträsk and its surroundings, and lush coastal forests and meadows. It is one of the rare and valuable natural areas in southern Finland. The trails are suitable for hiking and cycling, offering a distinct focus for your trip alongside the cultural destinations: peaceful experiences in nature.

Karskog Beach, with a pier and a diving tower, is located by the small, clear Lake Vikträsk. The lake and its facilities give this destination a different character from the forest and coastal landscapes of Kopparnäs–Störsvik. If spending time by the water is important on the day of your trip, you can make Karskog a destination in its own right; for hiking or cycling, the trails in the nature area are the relevant option.

Outdoor activities and travel planning

For a longer bike ride, the 32-kilometre Siuntio–Inkoo loop starts and ends at Siuntio railway station. It includes around 270 metres of elevation gain and challenging unpaved sections. The route is not marked on the ground; a navigation device is needed to follow it. These details can help you decide whether the ride suits your travel plans: it is a longer loop with specific requirements for navigation and terrain, not simply a short connection between two sights.

Another way to spend time outdoors is to visit Pikkala Bridge on the historic King’s Road, which passes through Siuntio. The bridge is for pedestrians and cyclists only. It therefore suits an exploration on foot or by bike, while the Siuntio–Inkoo loop should be considered a separate ride with a specified length and challenging sections.

Siuntio is entirely within the HSL area; Siuntio railway station is the terminus of the Y trains. This may be relevant when planning your trip if you are looking for a holiday apartment as a base for cultural visits, nature outings or cycling. Siuntio’s municipal swimming pool is also located in Hotel Siuntio; it has two pools and saunas. When planning your trip, you can also consider a swimming pool alongside the historic and scenic destinations.
