Korsholm brings together the everyday history of rural life and an archipelago landscape shaped by the Ice Age and post-glacial land uplift. It also features distinctive buildings and trails that make a wide range of excursions possible. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: you might be interested in cultural history, want to explore the Kvarken landscape, or choose a route based on its length and the type of activity.

Bridge and Archipelago

Completed in 1997, the Replot Bridge is 1,045 metres long and Finland’s longest bridge. It leads to Replot and Björköby. A prominent landmark, it stands alongside a landscape whose formation is much older: the last Ice Age shaped Kvarken, while rapid land uplift continues to create new shallows and unusual moraine ridges. Together, they form a labyrinthine landscape.

Most of the Korsholm archipelago belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site; 70 percent of the World Heritage area lies in Korsholm. From the Saltkaret observation tower, you can look out over the rocky archipelago formed by De Geer moraines. Svedjehamn offers a distinctive setting of its own: red boathouses create a special harbour atmosphere. It is a good destination for a day trip where you can experience the World Heritage Site from both a natural and a cultural perspective.

Village History and Söderfjärden

In the village of Solf in Korsholm municipality, Stundars is a large open-air museum dedicated to the lives of rural people, craftspeople and lower social classes in the Swedish-speaking countryside between Oravais in the north and Pörtom in the south. The period represented spans 1870 to 1920. Stundars also serves as a centre for crafts and as an example of traditional building conservation. During the summer season, various activities and guided tours are offered daily; participation is included in the admission price.

A trail links a visit to the museum with a longer walk: the Stundars hiking trail starts at the open-air museum, heads to Söderfjärden and the village of Munsmo, then returns to Stundars. It is 6.6 kilometres long. Meteoria tells the story of the Söderfjärden impact crater and was built at its centre. This brings cultural history and the story of the landscape together as distinct themes.

Trails for Different Plans

In Smedsby, the Smedsby Adventure Trail is 900 metres long and has seven checkpoints that can be visited year-round. The route follows the recreational trail and passes a playground, an outdoor fitness area and a pond. Smedsby Orienteering offers a different kind of exploration: the route is just over three kilometres long and starts and finishes at Elly Sigfrids Square. It can be used on foot, by bicycle, with a pushchair or in a wheelchair.

The 1.2-kilometre Hästhagens-Äppeldalens recreational trail links Hästhagen, Olavs lekpark, Körsbärsdalen, Äppeldalen and Rhododendronparken, and is maintained in winter. In Äppeldalen, the public can pick and eat apples. For a longer loop, the 6.6-kilometre Stundars hiking trail leads to Söderfjärden and Munsmo. The routes therefore differ both in length and in whether the focus is on cultural sites, checkpoints or connected green spaces.

The suggested cycling route through Korsholm offers a different scale: it covers a total of 180 to 200 kilometres and is arranged in daily stages of 50 to 70 kilometres. The route follows paved and gravel roads. For shorter or longer outings, you can use the stated route lengths as a practical guide when planning.

Local Flavours and Choosing a Holiday Apartment

Freshly smoked perch and herring, known as böckling, are part of the local food culture. They are considered delicacies in Korsholm; availability from individual fishers may vary seasonally. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to think in advance about which themes you want your trip to focus on: Stundars and the history of rural life, Söderfjärden and the landscape, or trails and outdoor exploration. This way, you can match the experiences described here to your own holiday plans without having to fit them all into one day.
