Korpijärvi brings together a distinctive village setting with birdwatching, art and waterside trails. The variety of experiences gives you ideas for planning your stay around your interests—whether you are drawn to the landscape and its birdlife or would rather focus on a route and a swimming spot.

Village and Lake

The village of Korpinen lies on the southern shore of Lake Korpinen. The village and its shoreline fields form an exceptional concentration of settlement in the sparsely populated border regions of North Karelia and North Savo. A local road runs from there, connecting Varpaisjärvi and Rautavaara. The combination of lakeshore, fields and village settlement gives Korpijärvi a distinct landscape character that sets it apart from the hiking and nature themes of the wider area.

Birdwatching Throughout the Year

In the Korpinen area, birds can usually be observed directly from the roads, including along Rautavaarantie, Siikakoskentie, Itärannantie and Paasikoskentie. You can spot a variety of field birds throughout the year in the extensive fields of Korpinen and neighbouring Porkkala. However, birdwatching opportunities in the area are relatively limited. Migratory birds stop at Itälampi in spring and autumn, where the pond is visible from the road. The open waters of Korpinen also thaw early in spring, making it worth looking out for the first spring migrants there.

Shoreline, Swimming Spot and Marked Trails

Näätähiekka swimming spot is located on the shore of Lake Älänne in Varpaisjärvi-Korpijärvi. It has two campfire sites, a woodshed, a toilet and a water point. The 8.6-kilometre shoreline route runs from Vongankoski via Näätähiekka to Haatainniemi. In the surrounding Älänne area, there are three marked trails, two of which are circular routes. The 6.2-kilometre Huuhkajankierros starts and ends at the Vongankoski rest area. On the Rautavaara side, the 3.3-kilometre Kaivannonkierto starts and ends at the Rouskunhiekka rest area, which also has a swimming spot. The lengths of 3.3, 6.2 and 8.6 kilometres represent different distances; the two shorter circular routes each return to their starting point. The Älänne area also features a distinctive body of water: the lake consists of two partially separated water basins, with a long esker running between them.

Theatre, Art and Horseback Riding

Korpiteatteri is located at Rautavaarantie 2090 (Road 582) in the Korpijärvi area of Varpaisjärvi. Performances take place indoors. A break is planned for 2026, with a return announced for summer 2027. Check current performance dates before visiting. In Onnela in Korpijärvi, the courtyard of Romurinsessan valtakunta features artworks made mostly from recycled materials. Kaviokoski Ranch offers guided riding lessons, trail rides, horse camps and lead-rein rides at events. Dates and availability may vary; check the current schedule in advance.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

When searching for a holiday rental, you can start by considering which experiences you want to shape your stay: birdwatching and village life in Korpinen, a waterside route, a swimming spot, or cultural and horseback riding activities. This helps you focus your search on the activities you plan to enjoy, rather than giving every travel idea equal weight.
