Church village history and culture
The historic street in the church village runs parallel to Lake Lavijärvi, along the upper edge of the fields rising from the lakeshore. Deciduous trees line the street, and its old layout is well preserved. Along it stand the equal-armed cross church with a west tower, completed in 1823; the vicarage from the 1870s; and well-preserved farmsteads and officials’ houses. The former crofter settlements of Konimäki and Kaivopuisto are also part of the church village’s history. The church, homes and farm buildings give the area a distinct cultural and historical focus.
The area’s settlement history also offers a glimpse into the past: permanent settlement around Lavia began in the late Middle Ages. In the 1560s, the village of Lavia, then part of the Karkku parish, had eight houses. The compact clustered village developed on a ridge between Karhijärvi, Naaranen and Lake Lavijärvi. A museum of Lavia’s history
The Lavian kotiseutumuseo presents the lives, traditions and craft skills of the people of Lavia. The museum building is a former granary dating from 1853, which began to be used as a museum in 1954. Museum operations and the collection of holdings began in 1957. After the municipalities of Lavia and Pori merged in 2015, the museum became part of the Satakunnan Museo. It is located at Tampereentie 26, 38600 Lavia.
Museum topics include fishing, hunting and church life. A collection of rocks and minerals is also on display, including Lavialiitti, a rock named after Lavia. This adds a distinct cultural element to your trip, alongside the historic street: you can focus on village history and buildings, or on the objects and collections.
