Two Nature Trails by Lake Orivesi
The Kitee Wilderness and Game Path is a circular route that can be walked in either direction. It consists of two sections: the 2.4-kilometre Parppeinlammi Nature Trail to the west and the 2.3-kilometre Hietaniemi Wilderness Trail to the east. The route is clearly marked on the ground, and includes some ascents and descents. The two named sections give the loop a clear structure, without their lengths being a measure of walking time.
The trail runs through an esker landscape on the shores of Lake Orivesi. Carved wooden animal figures stand along the route; there are also traps, wildlife fields, feeding stations for wild animals and moose observation towers. Information boards cover how the area has formed over time, as well as forestry, wildlife management and the wilderness traditions maintained there. The loop thus combines landscape views with information about how nature and wildlife are cared for.
The two sections, circular route and ascents and descents provide practical reference points for planning a hike. Check the latest trail description before setting out, as conditions may vary by season.
Cycling Route Starting at the Railway Station
The route “Saimaa by Cycle: Pohjoisen Saimaan soratiekierros, Osa 1” begins at Kitee railway station in Tolosenmäki. From there, the described section follows varied, remote country roads to Rääkkylä and then crosses the Arvinsalmi strait to the island of Oravinsalmi. This gives cyclists a clearly named starting point in the area and a described route towards Rääkkylä and Oravinsalmi.
As of September 2026, this section was listed as open for cycling; the full route was still under development. Check the latest route information before planning your stages.
Motorsport in Tolosenmäki
Kitee Race & Event offers opportunities for training and taking part in motorsport competitions. The venue has tracks for karting, the Jokamiesluokka class, RC cars and rally sprint. The Kitee motocross track is approximately 1,600 metres long and at least six metres wide. Riders travel anticlockwise; the surface is soft sand, and the jumps are made of clay. These dimensions and track features may change if the track is modified.
The rally sprint track has a different character: it is fast and technical, and challenges experienced drivers too. The motocross track’s paddock has a changing shelter, an outdoor toilet and a fire pit for grilling sausages, provided you bring your own firewood. Information about the facilities may change; check the operator’s latest information before visiting.
