Ylitornio Between River Landscapes and Aavasaksa
Accommodation in Ylitornio
The Tornionjoki and the rugged fells on either side of its valley give Ylitornio a distinctive landscape. At the same time, the municipality is part of Tornionjokilaakso, a traditional agricultural area. Visitors planning a stay can therefore choose from a range of interests: river and lake landscapes, hiking trails, or the historic sites on Aavasaksa.
River, Fells and a Shared Border Region
Ylitornio and the Swedish municipality of Övertorneå together form a historically, linguistically and culturally unique cross-border whole. This gives the region a distinctive cultural dimension as well as its landscapes. Orhinselänniemi, a unique sandbank on the Ylitornio side of Lake Miekojärvi, is located on the lake. Aavasaksa, in turn, is one of Finland’s official national landscapes and offers a focal point for those interested in nature and history.
Aavasaksa: Views and the History of Surveying
Kruununkierros, a scenic trail, is located on Aavasaksanvaara. The observation tower is also a specific destination: it is 400 metres from the car park, which you can reach on foot or by road. A paved road leads to the Aavasaksa survey point. These details can help you plan your visit around your interests without conflating the scenic trail, the tower and the survey point.
Aavasaksa is also associated with several surveying expeditions. The survey point of the Struve Geodetic Arc was established there in 1845. Aavasaksa was also used as a survey point for the arc during Maupertuis’s measurements in 1736–1737. Visitors interested in the history of science will find two distinct historical dates here, which they can consider separately during their visit.
Hiking, Skiing and Getting Out on the Water
The trails differ in character. Aurinkovaarojen Jotos is a challenging hiking trail in Ylitornio. The Sompasen nature trail in the Miekojärvi area introduces visitors to the nature, geology and history of Sompasen-Kalottivaara. The marked Miekojärvi–Vietonen hiking trail also leads to the sandy beach at Orhinselänniemi. Those looking for a challenging hike can distinguish this option from a trail focused on nature and information.
Winter sports are also part of the local offering: Aavasaksa Ski Centre has one lift and three downhill runs. A cross-country ski connection between Ainiovaara and Aavasaksa links Ainiovaara Ski Centre with Aavasaksanvaara. On the water, the Yöttömän yön melontareitistö paddling route network runs across Lake Miekojärvi to the Tornionjoki; Ylitornio is one of the listed landing places. These different activities offer various clues to the landscapes and holiday pursuits that may interest you most.
Getting Your Bearings and Planning Your Journey
Ylitornio railway station is right in the town centre. National Road 21 runs west of the town centre. Buses run from Ylitornio to Tornio, Rovaniemi and Pello. You can also travel from Ylitornio by train to Helsinki and Oulu, among other destinations; from Haparanda railway station, there is a train connection to Sweden. If you are looking for a holiday rental, these location and transport links can help you decide whether to base your stay closer to the town centre or around the activities that matter to you. They do not replace checking the specific location of an individual property.
