The Luosto area is part of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, one of Finland’s oldest national park areas. Amethyst was discovered at Lampivaara: a rare, purple, translucent form of quartz. At the amethyst mine, you can search for your own lucky amethyst and keep it as a souvenir. The mine welcomes visitors year-round; during some weeks in May and November, weather conditions can make getting there uncertain. Check the latest visitor arrangements and access conditions before your trip.

Summit Trails, Snowshoeing and Ahvenlampi

The trail to the summit of Ukko-Luosto is four kilometres long and leads to a viewpoint; the climb involves 575 steps. Important for planning: the summit trail is accessible only in summer and autumn, and there is a high risk of avalanches in winter. Check the latest official guidance before setting out on a hike.

Snowshoe hikes have their own character, too: the trails are marked with blue signs and are suitable for snowshoeing, but are not maintained. One route starts at the Luosto Gate (Luoston portti), leads to Tikkalaavu and continues from there towards the summit of Ukko-Luosto. A circular route via the Torvinen maja café is about 7.5 kilometres long. Check the current conditions before setting out.

The area around Ahvenlampi Pond offers a different kind of stay. An accessible, family-friendly circular trail is 2.8 kilometres long; a traditional Finnish kota stands by the lake. In winter, the trail is maintained and lit. As information about maintenance and lighting can change, it is advisable to check the current conditions before a winter visit. The pond in the centre of Luosto is also an easily accessible fishing spot: jetties around the water make it easier to cast from the shore. A permit is required for fishing; check the applicable requirements in advance.

Slopes, Tobogganing and a Bike Ride

Lapland Ski Resort Luosto has ten slopes. Two are in the family slope area: the forest Adventure Trail and the wide Family Slope. A conveyor belt takes visitors up to the tubing and toboggan hill. These slopes and facilities give you practical options if you want to combine a day on the downhill slopes with a trip to the toboggan hill.

A described mountain biking route starts in central Luosto, at the entrance gates to the national park. It follows the ski trail towards the Ukkoluosto car park and continues from there along a ski trail towards Lampivaara. Seasonal accessibility and trail conditions may vary; check them before setting out. The activities available in Luosto therefore depend not only on what you want to do, but also on conditions that can shape your plans for the day.

Reindeer Park and Regional Connections

Nearby is Kopara Reindeer Park. There, you can meet reindeer, go on sleigh rides of varying lengths, and learn more about traditional reindeer herding and the life of a reindeer herder. The self-guided Poronpolku trail runs through the park and takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Check the latest visitor and access arrangements in advance.

Beyond Luosto, a cross-country ski trail network stretching a total of 150 kilometres connects the Luosto and Pyhä ski resorts. The length of the network may vary depending on conditions and maintenance. This regional connection is distinct from the individual trails and activities at the destination itself—a useful distinction if you want to keep your trip to Luosto or include other trails in your plans.

Getting There and Choosing a Holiday Apartment

Luosto is accessible from Rovaniemi Airport by direct bus services that operate year-round. Bus routes and timetables can change, so check your connection before travelling. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide which destinations will shape your stay, such as the amethyst mine, trails around Ahvenlampi, the summit trail or the slopes. This way, you can focus your search on the experiences that matter to you, rather than choosing accommodation separately from your plans.
