Äkäslompolo
Accommodation in Äkäslompolo
Äkäslompolo offers different ways to experience the surrounding area: take the Kuru lift from here to the summit of Ylläs, or explore other perspectives on the landscape along cycling and paddling routes. In winter, the slopes of Ylläs Ski Resort Äkäslompolo shape your stay; in summer, hiking, cycling and rest stops by the lake or in Varkaankuru take centre stage. When choosing a holiday apartment, a useful question is which of these experiences you want to shape your days away.
Skiing at Ylläs and views across the national park
Ylläs Ski Resort Äkäslompolo has a separate practice area for young children and beginners. The gentler slopes in the lower part of the ski area are also suitable for children and beginners. Families planning which slopes to ski can take these areas into account; Lännenlevelä slope is up to 200 metres wide. The northern slopes of Ylläs offer views across Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. A ride on the Kuru lift takes you from Äkäslompolo to the summit, adding a mountain-top experience to the views of the fell landscape.
In spring, natural snow remains on the slopes of Varkaankuru longer than anywhere else. This is a distinctive feature of the landscape at this time of year, but it does not describe conditions on any individual slopes. During the ski season, the Ylläs Ski Bus connects services and hotels in Äkäslompolo with Ylläs Ski Resort Äkäslompolo. From November to early May, it also connects Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi with the ski area. The bus also stops in front of the Kellokas Visitor Centre on Tunturintie. If getting to the ski area is important to you, you can factor in this seasonal bus service when choosing your accommodation in Äkäslompolo.
Nature and culture at Kellokas Visitor Centre
Yllästunturi Visitor Centre Kellokas offers insights into local nature and culture. The Meän elämää exhibition introduces both topics. The centre is also home to the Savottamuseo, whose exhibits tell the story of forestry and forest workers’ accommodation. Rotating art exhibitions add to the offering. A visit to the visitor centre can therefore include regional history, art and nature. Kellokas is accessible and suitable for families with children—a specific place to visit if you want to include cultural experiences alongside outdoor activities.
The Tano House is also part of the area’s history: it is the oldest building in Äkäslompolo. If you prefer being outdoors, you can explore the story trail on foot or by bicycle; it is designed for the whole family. These different options make Äkäslompolo appealing for more than just days on the slopes: families can switch between activity, nature and culture, so not every outing has to be the same.
Summer trails, the lake and paddling trips
In summer, hiking trails and ski-area service roads lead from Ylläs Ski Resort Äkäslompolo to the summit of Ylläs. For a bike ride, try Kesänkijärven polkaisu: this family-friendly loop starts in Äkäslompolo village, goes to Lake Kesänkijärvi and returns through the forests of Nilivaara. Another option is the cycling route around Äkäslompolo, which passes Karilan Navettagalleria, where you can stop for a break. These options offer different kinds of outings: a loop by the lake and through the forest, or a ride with a stop at the gallery.
There are also different ways to get out on the water. You can paddle along the Äkäsjoki from Äkäslompolo to the Muoniojoki and continue to the Swedish border. The lakes in Äkäslompolo are also suitable for circular paddling routes, so there is no need to arrange a separate pick-up at the end. If you prefer a trip that brings you back to your starting point, a circular route offers an alternative to the river journey. In summer, the shelter at Lake Kesänkijärvi is an easily accessible place to rest. The Varkaankuru day-trip hut is also an easily accessible place to rest in summer.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Äkäslompolo, you can consider whether you want to focus on ski days and the bus connection, culture at Kellokas, or summer hiking, cycling and paddling trips. Some of the experiences described start in the village or at the ski area; others take you to the lake, through the forests of Nilivaara or along the river towards the Swedish border.
