Hirvensalmi offers insights into Finnish history and culture, as well as experiences in nature and outdoor activities. Its attractions range from a museum in the town centre and a summer festival with a varied programme to hiking trails, cycling routes and waterways for paddling. When planning your holiday, you can therefore consider whether culture, landscapes or active excursions should be the main focus.

Local History and Exhibitions

The Pitäjäntupa Museum is located in the centre of Hirvensalmi. It is housed in a former vicarage built in 1898. The building also served as the municipal administration until 1984. Its former use gives a museum visit a tangible connection to the history of the area.

The Pitäjäntupa Museum exhibits pictures and objects relating to Ahti Karjalainen’s career and turning points in Finnish history. The Hirvensalmi Local History Museum also features the permanent exhibition “Luonnon kauneus ainainen” (“The Everlasting Beauty of Nature”). It tells the story of the relationship between people and nature. Visitors interested in political history will find a different perspective here from the exhibition that places people and nature at its centre.

A Summer Festival with Local Connections

Every summer, Tervaleppäjuhlat offers a varied programme featuring artist performances, activities, art, food, sports and items to take home. It is described as Hirvensalmi’s largest and longest-running summer event. The festival aims to bring together local residents and people who spend their leisure time in the area, and to highlight local entrepreneurship, community and history. It is therefore a cultural highlight in its own right, alongside the exhibitions and trails.

Lakes, Trees and Trails

The municipality of Hirvensalmi encompasses 127 lakes and 327 islands, offering plenty of opportunities for excursions. You can enjoy activities such as paddling on Hirvensalmi’s waterways. Tervaleppäkuja offers a distinctive setting of trees: it is said to be Finland’s only black alder avenue. The black alders can be more than 100 years old and over 30 metres tall.

The Kissakoski Nature and Culture Trail connects the natural landscapes of South Savo with an old industrial environment. There are two circular routes: a shorter 2.5 km route and a longer 6 km route. The trail is considered easy and is also suitable for beginners. The Kissakoski industrial site and its workers’ houses are considered a nationally significant monument to industrial history. Here, nature and industrial history can be explored as two themes of an excursion.

The Kalkkero hiking trail passes through the villages of Tuukkala, Hämeenmäki and Hurrila, with scenery that alternates between forests, shorelines and rural landscapes. A lookout point at Kalkkerovuori lies 151 metres above sea level. From there, you can see far across Lake Suontee.

Active Excursions and Travel Interests

For cyclists, a 12.3 km route takes in the outdoor trails of Hirvensalmi village, picturesque gravel roads and the Pöyrynmäki mountain bike trail. The Hirvensalmi route has a rest area at the summit of Pöyrynmäki and connects to the Mäknistö rest and campfire site, which has an outdoor toilet. There is also an 18-hole disc golf course right next to the Hirvensalmi sports field.

When choosing a holiday apartment or cottage, your preferred type of holiday can be a useful starting point: museum visits and local history offer a different focus from hiking, cycling, disc golf or paddling. If you prefer a shorter or longer route for an excursion, you can choose between the two listed options on the Kissakoski trail. This allows you to plan your holiday around the activities that interest you most.

You can also explore other local destinations: Rahula, Pertunmaa, Vanhamäki, Haukivuori, Otava, Puumala, Kangasniemi and Majavesi.
