Lakes, a varied mountain biking trail network and traces of different eras shape the experiences on offer in Kuhmoinen. The municipality offers both active pursuits and cultural discoveries: you can choose from water sports, cycling routes of varying difficulty, a children’s art trail and historic sites. When looking for a holiday rental in Kuhmoinen, you can decide early what you want to focus on, without assuming that all the experiences promise the same kind of outing.

Lakes and Outdoor Activities

The many lakes in Kuhmoinen offer opportunities for boating, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding in numerous locations. Kayaks and SUP boards can be rented from several businesses. The area also includes part of Tehinselkä, the widest open-water area of Lake Päijänne. There are several water sports to choose from, and you can decide which ones will shape your trip based on your interests.

If you prefer mountain biking, Kuhmoinen has a 65-kilometre trail network. It includes easy, challenging and very challenging sections. You can ride shorter stretches or include the entire network in your tour.

There are other ways to stay active, too. The versatile disc golf course near the school centre has 18 holes. People of any age or skill level can play there alone or in a group. The municipality also maintains around ten cross-country skiing trails, ranging in length from 0.5 to 10 kilometres.

Industrial History and Ancient Traces

The Kuhmoisten Saha industrial complex is located on the shore of Lake Päijänne. It was established between 1912 and 1985 and, despite changes in use and renovation, remains relatively cohesive and intact. Kuhmoinen Local Heritage Museum offers a different historical perspective: housed in a three-storey building, it displays an extensive collection of agricultural objects. Those interested in industrial history will encounter a complex here, while the museum focuses on a collection from everyday agricultural life.

Among the older traces are the Pyhänpää rock paintings near Lästilä in Kuhmoinen. Two red ochre images, dating back to the Stone Age, are still visible. Linnavuori is an ancient defensive fort, with its rocky summit rising 40 metres above the surrounding area. Päijälä Hillfort was designated a nationally valuable landscape area in 2021 and is one of 186 such areas in Finland. These sites each represent a different form of history: rock paintings, a defensive fort and a designated landscape area.

Getting Around and Discovering the Area with Children

The children’s art trail in Kuhmoinen Central Park was created especially for children. Artist Eino Viikilä contributed to its design. At the foot of Päijälä Hillfort there is a paved parking area and an information board, which is also available in English; a newer information board is located at the summit.

The public library also serves as a tourist information centre. It is located at Toritie 42 and can be reached by phone at +358 40 359 4543. When choosing accommodation in Kuhmoinen, you can consider which experiences you want to focus on during your trip: water activities, cycling routes, cultural history or activities for children each offer a different emphasis.
