Bystrá nad Jizerou: Wooden Bridge, Trails and Village Life

A Bridge with a Purpose of Its Own

The covered wooden bridge, known as the “bysterský dřevěný most,” spans the Jizera on the border with Benešov u Semil. Built as a suspension bridge in 1922, it is a technical cultural monument. At the same time, it is once again open to the public and remains an important transport link for this comparatively remote municipality. Its function is therefore as much a part of its history as its design. The municipality describes it as the only surviving and functioning bridge of its kind in Europe.

Landscape and Trails Around Bystrá

From the hills and slopes around Bystrá, views extend to the ridges of the Giant Mountains and to Ještěd, Kozákov and Strážník. Strážník lies in the vicinity of the village: its area is a national natural monument, and a melaphyre rock city lies on its western side. Nearby visitor attractions also include the Bozkov Dolomite Caves, Bohemian Paradise and the Giant Mountains.

A green-marked hiking trail runs through Bystrá nad Jizerou, connecting Semily, Jilemnice and Vrchlabí. Cycle Route No. 4174 passes through the village and links Bohemian Paradise with the Giant Mountains. This offers different ways to explore the region: the hiking trail connects the places mentioned, while the cycle route provides a regional link between two landscapes. Village History and Living Traditions

The first written record of Bystrá nad Jizerou dates from 1320. To mark the village’s 700th anniversary, a commemorative pine was planted in 2020 near Těhník Hill, on the boundary of the cadastral area. The local sports club erected a war memorial after the First World War; commemorative events are held there every year.

The volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1893, remains active and plays an important role in village cultural life. The first fire station, built in 1907, houses an exhibition on the history of the local fire brigade. The cultural centre is also part of community life: residents built it in the 1970s, and it continues to be a focal point of the village.

The historic village setting includes numerous well-preserved 19th-century cottages, typical of the foothills of the Giant Mountains. Most are still inhabited. The coexistence of preserved older buildings and a living village gives the area’s history a visible connection to the present.

Local associations and the municipal administration organise a variety of events. These include balls, children’s carnival, Children’s Day, theatre performances and the burning of the witches, as well as football, firefighting and other sports competitions. Event dates vary.

Horse Riding as Another Activity
