Hřebečná: Apartments and Holiday Homes

Hřebečná combines underground mining traces with distinctive landforms. The Hřebečná mining district documents 400 years of tin mining from the 16th to the 20th century.

Mining and History

One of the most significant testimonies is the Mauritius Mine, which was declared a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic in 2014. The mine was the largest tin mine in the Czech part of the Ore Mountains. The Bílá holubice (White Dove) adit is also part of the district's history: it is one of the oldest adits in the Zadní Hřebečná tin deposit and was probably driven at the beginning of the second half of the 16th century.

The importance of the mining extended far beyond the district. Tin from Hřebečná was exported through the markets of Nuremberg to almost all of Europe.

Underground

During the tour of the Kryštof adit, visitors descend 12 metres in elevation into the adit. Helmets, lamps, boots and coats are lent to visitors for the tour. It lasts about an hour and covers a distance of 400 metres.

Traces in the Landscape

The mining landscape of Hřebečná preserves characteristic relics of open-pit and underground tin mining. This connection is particularly evident at the Schneppova pinka. It is a depression in the terrain approximately 80 metres long, up to 20 metres wide and up to 20 metres deep. It was formed by open-pit and underground mining activities, followed by the collapse of mine workings, as early as before 1730.

In the upper part of the Schneppova pinka, the course of a greisen vein and part of the old Tagstrecke adit, which was created in the second half of the 16th century, can be traced.

Water and Rock

The historic landscape also includes the Hřebečná mining water system. It was established from the 16th century onwards across an area of 3.5 km² and comprises inflow and drainage ditches with a total length of more than 10 km.

A geological feature can be found in the basalt quarry between Ryžovna and Hřebečná. There, columnar jointing in volcanic rocks is exposed, formed as a lava flow cooled.
