Nicosia combines regular market activity with an Old Town whose history is visible in its museums, buildings and city walls. The city also offers places with very different focuses: collections on Cypriot history and folk art, historic architecture and a cycle route in Pedhieos River Linear Park. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first consider which of these sides of the city you want to shape your itinerary.

Markets and life in the walled Old Town

Two open-air markets are held every week in the Constanza car park, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. These days offer a regular point of reference for planning; market times may change. Laiki Geitonia is also located in the walled city, a pedestrian area with restored houses and buildings dating from the 18th century. Residential homes stand alongside art shops and tavernas. This means you’ll encounter both historic buildings and a mix of uses in this neighbourhood, rather than just a collection of individual attractions.

The medieval walls are also part of the cityscape: they encompass eleven heart-shaped bastions and an 80-metre-wide moat. Together with the Old Town’s lanes and buildings, they offer a distinct focus for anyone interested in urban history and architecture. Laiki Geitonia, in turn, combines its historic setting with residential homes, art shops and tavernas. These different highlights can help you organise your itinerary without treating a market visit and a museum visit as the same experience.

Museums with diverse collections

The Pancyprian Gymnasium Museums are located in the historic centre of Nicosia. The gymnasium is considered Cyprus’s oldest secondary school. Its museum collections include archaeological and numismatic objects, as well as old maps and weapons; most of the exhibits are connected to Cyprus. If you’re interested in different approaches to history, you’ll find archaeological pieces here alongside items relating to cartography and the history of weapons.

The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia spans a broad period: its permanent exhibition includes objects relating to the region and the ancient city, dating from 3900 BC to 325 AD. Other galleries cover the Byzantine and medieval, Venetian, Ottoman and British periods. The Byzantine Museum in the walled Old Town displays more than 200 icons from the 9th to the 19th century, as well as sacred vessels, vestments and books. The collections thus have different focuses, from the city’s long history and its successive periods to religious art.

The Cyprus Folk Art Museum adds further perspectives with basketry, leatherwork and naïve painting, as well as agricultural implements and weaving tools. It was founded in 1937 by members of the Society of Cypriot Studies and is housed in the old Archbishop’s Palace in Nicosia. For a trip that brings together several themes, archaeological and numismatic collections, icons and folk art offer clearly distinct areas of interest.

Architecture and cultural activities

The Archontiko of Axiothea is an 18th-century mansion in Nicosia’s Old Town and is considered a characteristic example of urban architecture. At the same time, it serves as the University of Cyprus’s centre for cultural activities, exhibitions and literary seminars. When planning your trip, the mansion’s role as an example of urban architecture and its cultural use are two distinct aspects of the Old Town.

An active perspective on Nicosia

The cycle path in Pedhieos River Linear Park offers another way to explore the city. It starts at the bridge south of the Presidential Palace and ends at the old General Hospital. Along the way, the route passes the traditional heart of Ayion Omoloyiton and continues to the park opposite the Church of St John the Baptist near Giorkeio. Check local conditions before setting out.

When choosing a holiday apartment, your preferred itinerary can be the best place to start: markets and the Old Town, museum collections, historic architecture or the cycle route each offer a different focus. Consider which of these matters most to your trip, and base your accommodation search on that. This way, your decision won’t be guided by a single keyword, but by the experiences you want to combine in Nicosia.
