Asgata lies at an elevation of 190 m in the middle of a valley, surrounded by mountains. The directions and elevations of the surrounding mountains give the landscape a distinctive profile: Kokkines and Vouppa lie north of the village at 370 m, while Monodentri is to the south at 340 m. To the southwest, Teratsotos rises to 458 m; Troulloi lies to the west at 339 m, and Gerakarkos to the east at 361 m.

Valley, nature and cultural landscape

Much of the area around Asgata consists of umber and limestone soil and is used mainly for agriculture. This includes the cultivation of various vegetables, legumes, potatoes, olives, carobs, almonds and pomegranates. The landscape of the area also includes a wide variety of wildflowers.

An area southwest of Asgata belongs to the Natura 2000 network. Another area is designated as Zone “Z”, a nature conservation zone. These are two different types of designation. Visitors interested in nature and landscape can explore these two distinct conservation topics, as well as the mountains and the surrounding agricultural land.

Mills, mining and village history

In the 1920s, Spyros Louka built one of Cyprus’s first motorised mills in Asgata. Its premises included an olive press, a grain mill, a wood splitter and a motor for cleaning cotton. The equipment brought together different aspects of processing at the time, making the mill a distinctive part of local history.

The Church of the Twelve Apostles is considered the oldest surviving church in Asgata. It stands east of the village on a steep slope above the Asgata River. The Asgata Mining and Miner Heritage Museum opened in May 2024. Its exhibition includes geological instruments, ancient artefacts, photographs of miners from Asgata and their original mining equipment.

Mining history can also be explored outside the village: near Asgata, visitors can see mining sites and tunnels at Platies, Mavridia, Lantarka, Mavri Sykia and Petra. Alongside the history of the mill and the church, these sites offer different ways to engage with the village’s past.

Hiking trails and routes around Asgata

The Asgata area has nature trails and dirt roads for hiking and cycling. One hiking trail runs from Potamia to Hartzi, passing Kourvellorotsos, the waterfall on the Mersineri stream, Kokkinorotsos and the old bridge. South of Asgata, another hiking trail leads to a site where the Lefkara milk vetch is being studied.

Another route starts at Stavri, just before the turn-off to Asgata, and heads towards Teratsotos. It can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or by car; afterwards, the road leads down to the village of Kalavasos. The options therefore also differ in how you get around: as well as routes for hiking and cycling, there is a route that can also be travelled by car.

Consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on the trails and landscape or on the history of the mill and mining. Asgata brings together these different interests, with its location in the valley, surrounding mountains and historic sites in and near the village.
