History and Buildings
Pirovac's Old Settlement is a medieval settlement and fortress, first documented in 1298 as the property of the noble Šubić family. Until the mid-19th century, Pirovac was a walled island; land reclamation at the beginning of the 20th century connected the historic settlement with the mainland.
Vrata sela preserves sections of walls from the 16th century and was built in 1505 by Count Petar Draganić to defend against the Ottomans. A Templar cross is carved into its base.
Draganić-Vrančić Castle was extended and decorated in the Neo-Renaissance style; Moorish influence can be seen in the design of its chimneys. It housed a valuable family library. Valuable documents and objects of importance to Croatian history have also been preserved there.
A Glagolitic inscription from 1495 is carved into the side entrance of St. George's Chapel. The Draganić-Vrančić family cemetery chapel contains a Gothic sarcophagus with a relief of the Virgin Mary by Bonino da Milano from 1429.
Culture
The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was built in the 18th century on the foundations of an older church dating from 1506 in Pirovac's historic centre. Its façade features a statue of the Archangel Gabriel by Bonino da Milano.
Pirovačko Cultural Summer is considered a recurring summer programme featuring fishing evenings, concerts, exhibitions and folklore performances.
Water and Surroundings
Boat trips from Pirovac lead to local coves and the island of Sustipanac. Marina Pirovac is located in the town centre and offers berths for up to 200 boats. The Kornati and Krka national parks are considered nearby destinations for sailing excursions.
In the vicinity of Pirovac, freshwater fishing is possible at Vransko Lake via the Prosika Canal.
