Nature
The Zrmanja flows through a karst landscape and several canyons, forming travertine and waterfalls along the way. Obrovac remained a small commercial port town because the Zrmanja was navigable as far as the town.
History and Culture
The present-day settlement of Obrovac developed as a suburbium of a medieval fortress on a hill; from the 14th century onwards, Obrovac was owned by the Krbava princes of the Kurjaković family. The remains of the Kurjaković fortress are still in fairly good condition today.
The parish church of St. Joseph was originally built as a medieval structure in the 15th century and was completely renovated in the Baroque style in 1794.
The Church of the Holy Trinity preserves older icons from the original iconostasis, created by the Greek painter Evtimije Dimitrijades in 1835/1836. After the previous building was demolished in 1834, it was rebuilt, acquired its final appearance at the end of the 19th century, and was consecrated in 1906.
The remains of the Benedictine Monastery of St. George Koprivski can still be seen in the Obrovac cemetery. The Obrovac Heritage Museum presents ethnographic and natural history collections in its permanent exhibition.
