Komiža: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Komiža lies at the foot of Mount Hum, which rises to a height of 587 metres.

Culture and History

Kaštel Komuna, a 16th-century fortress, stands directly on the waterfront. Venetian authorities built it using revenue from Komiža’s fishermen to defend the town against possible attacks by Turks and pirates.

The Church of St. Mary Gusarica was built on the coast of Komiža in the mid-16th century. Its Renaissance design comprises three interconnected churches with three joined triangular façades.

The Ivan-Vitić Cultural Centre is a modernist pavilion connecting the Rogači barracks with Komiža’s fishing settlement. From the 16th century onwards, Komiža became the fishing centre of the island of Vis. A fast type of fishing boat is also associated with the town: the Gajeta, also known as the Falkuša.

Nature

Kamenice is a pebble beach in Komiža with cold-water springs and shade from tamarisk trees.

The Geopark visitor centre is located in Komiža at Batuda 2. It provides information about the rocks of Vis, its natural and cultural heritage, traditions, and the preservation of this heritage.

The Blue Grotto on Biševo is described as being 8.3 km from Komiža. Access is by a small boat through a narrow passage; reflected sunlight creates a blue-silver shimmer inside.

Trails

The Viški arhipelag Geopark has three geotrails: Geostaza Komiža, Geostaza Biševo, and Geostaza Vis–Rukavac.

The Komiža–Zagrebenje–Oključna route begins on the waterfront of Komiža. The Komiža–Dragodid–Široko Brdo–Zagrebenje–Komiža route reaches a plateau with views of the northern coast of Vis and the Split Archipelago.
