In the Municipality of Dugi Rat, coastal landscapes meet mountain ranges. Above the municipality, the Mosor ridge rises more than 400 metres above sea level; above the old part of Duće, the summit of Zahod reaches 594 metres. Along the coast, beaches and promenades shape the opportunities available to visitors. The municipality lies between the towns of Omiš and Split, both of which have a long history and numerous cultural and architectural monuments.

Sandy beaches, promenades and the sea

The sandy beaches of Dugi Rat extend continuously for three kilometres to the border with Omiš. Their sand was carried down by the Cetina and deposited west of its mouth by sea currents. In 1989 and 1990, the entire beach was widened with additional sand to create a shallow swimming area 300 to 400 metres wide, with a depth that gradually increases to two to three metres. Pebble beaches and promenades are also among the visitor attractions in Dugi Rat.

Water sports add to the beach experience: almost every beach in Dugi Rat offers opportunities to ride a jet ski, sail or waterski; there are also water parks for children. If you are planning a particular activity at a specific beach, check its current availability in advance. The Riviera also offers a range of underwater landscapes for diving enthusiasts: shallow areas, deep walls and cliffs, as well as a Second World War wreck. There is a clear restriction for Vruja Bay: it is suitable only for the most experienced divers, and recreational dives are permitted only under expert supervision.

Cycling tours and routes through the landscape

Dugi Rat’s cycling programme includes four MTB routes: Route 160 “Sveti Ivan”, Route 161 “Ponor (Abyss)”, Route 162 “Viper” and Route 163 “Battalion”. There is also road and family route 175, “A Mythical Cycling Trip”. The “Ponor (Abyss)” route starts in Dugi Rat and runs via Jesenice and Stare Duće back to Dugi Rat; it is 9.2 kilometres long. Check the current condition of the routes before setting out.

Exploring the Riviera on foot offers a different experience. Hiking trails pass through old, partly abandoned villages, olive groves, vineyards, forests and bays. When planning, you can therefore weigh up beach and water-sport days, a cycling tour and a hike through varied landscapes, without limiting your holiday to just one activity.

Villages, history and Dalmatian traditions

The old village of Jesenice has preserved stone houses, streets and squares, as well as historical monuments. Some churches are more than 200 years old; old village cemeteries and bell towers are also part of the local landscape. Above Zeljovići in Jesenice lies Turska Peć, a prehistoric site with the oldest known traces of human life in the area of Poljica and Omiš.

In Duće, the parish church of Saint Anthony brings together two historical periods: it was built in 1864 on the site of a chapel mentioned in 1748. The altarpiece on the high altar was painted by Vlaho Bukovac in Paris in 1886. The folklore society “Dalmacija” from Dugi Rat is also part of the municipality’s living cultural history. It was founded on 8 March 1967 to preserve traditional and choreographed dances and songs of the Croatian people, particularly those from the Dalmatian island, coastal and hinterland regions. The society also hosts and organises numerous cultural events in the municipality; check current information for specific event dates.

A regional speciality is Soparnik from Poljica, which is on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. It is served as a local speciality in the taverns of Dugi Rat. This culinary connection adds another dimension to holiday planning alongside the coast, outdoor activities and cultural heritage.

Choosing a suitable holiday apartment

The experiences you want to focus on can guide your choice of holiday apartment: the beach and promenade, water sports, cycling and hiking trails, or historical places and traditions. If you are travelling with children, water parks and Route 175, which is designated as a family route, can be part of your daily plans.
