Rab brings together a medieval townscape, summer traditions and trails through forests and coastal landscapes. The old town with its four church towers, Rabska Fjera and the various hiking and cycling routes each offer a different focus for a trip. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, your interests can be a good starting point: would you like your stay to centre mainly on history and culture, or on hikes and cycling tours?

Old town, churches and Rabska Fjera

The old town of Rab is enclosed by ancient city walls and is recognisable by its four church towers. In Kampor, the Monastery of St Euphemia was founded in 1444; part of the monastery was converted into the Ethnographic Museum of the Town of Rab. The Church of St Peter in Supetarska Draga dates from 1059. It is widely considered one of the best-preserved Romanesque buildings on the Adriatic coast. Its Gothic bell tower is considered one of the oldest on Croatia’s Adriatic coast.

A highlight of the summer calendar is Rabska Fjera. It is Croatia’s oldest and largest medieval summer festival; its tradition began on 21 July 1364. The festival takes place every year from 25 to 27 July. Craft workshops give visitors an insight into traditional production methods, such as making belts or fragrant pomades. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the programme for your travel year.

Discover history along new trails

JUXTA MARE is a virtual museum about the history and culture of boatbuilding, seafaring and fishing on the island of Rab. It features 13 discovery points along the promenade from Banjol to Barbat. Videos, photographs, texts and augmented reality present the content in different ways. Visitors access it by scanning the QR code on a sign beside each point.

Rab Archeological (T)races also brings together cultural history and landscape: 34 information points are located along educational trails totalling approximately 40 kilometres. The trails pass through Kampor, Lopar and Supetarska Draga and include protected landscape areas. The associated app works offline and is intended for walkers, cyclists, hikers and people interested in nature and cultural heritage.

Hiking and cycling with different focuses

Kamenjak reaches a summit elevation of 408 metres and is the highest and largest limestone massif on the island of Rab. It also protects the island from cold northern influences. The forests of the Kalifront Peninsula offer opportunities for leisurely walks. The hilly areas and trails are considered not particularly demanding and are also suitable for older visitors; conditions may vary.

The routes vary in length and character. Depending on the route chosen, the Rab-Maman Trail is about 14 kilometres long; much of it follows broad tracks and coastal paths that are also suitable for cyclists. The 12-kilometre trekking route from Mišnjak to Lopar is described as a route for Škraping, meaning walking over rocky terrain. The Premuziceva-1 geological trail is 8 kilometres long and crosses the island’s main ridge as well as the hidden Fruga Valley. There are no rest areas or drinking water along the trail; plan accordingly and check trail conditions locally.

For mountain bikers, the Rab MTB 1 route leads to Dundo Forest, follows the southern Premužić Trail and continues to the Kalifront Peninsula. Check current trail conditions separately. In Komrčar Park, numerous trails wind down through wooded hills to the beaches of Rab. Together, these routes offer different ways to include nature, exercise and cultural heritage in your travel plans.

Island flavours and getting there

The Rab cake is part of the island’s culinary tradition and has been a Rab speciality for more than 800 years. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which experiences you would like to shape your stay: historic sites and festivals offer a different focus from longer hikes, rocky trails or cycling tours. If your fellow travellers have different preferences, these contrasts can help you weigh up the kind of itinerary you want.

The ferry service from Stinica to Mišnjak on the island’s south side is listed as operating year-round, with a crossing time of 15 minutes. The passenger-only catamaran from Rijeka to the port of Rab Town is listed as operating year-round, with one departure daily and a journey time of one hour and 45 minutes. Check the timetables before travelling.

Rab in the wider context of the Kvarner Bay

Beyond the island itself, the Kvarner Bay offers a broader regional context. The cultural and tourist route Putovima Frankopana includes a total of 17 Frankopan castles and three religious sites in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The scale of nature conservation is also evident there: the Natura 2000 network comprises 111 sites in the county and covers nearly 75 percent of its land area and 16 percent of its sea area. These regional figures describe the Kvarner Bay or the county, not additional features of the island of Rab.
