Discover Vučnik: Culture and trails in the surrounding area

Vučnik lies in the eastern part of the Kajkavian dialect area in Gorski Kotar. Nearby, a poet's museum, churches and trails through the Kupa Valley offer different ways to spend your stay: sometimes with a focus on literature and architectural history, sometimes outdoors on hiking and cycling trails. A poet, his home and the region

In Lukovdol, the Ivan Goran Kovačić Memorial Museum is located in the poet's birth house. It explores his life and work through five exhibition themes: “Goran and Lukovdol”, “Goran as a writer and journalist”, “Goran with the Partisans”, “Goran's homeland” and “Goranovo proljeće”. Alongside these themes, the museum also uses ethnographic material from Gorski Kotar. The exhibition thus brings together a personal life story and regional connections. The area's architectural history also tells of different eras. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Lukovdol is one of the oldest churches in Gorski Kotar. According to the parish priest, the present-day building was constructed around 1573. The single-nave Late Gothic structure has a semicircular apse and a massive tower with a tall, pointed roof. Near Lukovdol, at Rtić, stands the Chapel of St Francis Xavier, the oldest religious building in the Vrbovsko municipal area; it underwent extensive restoration in 1713. The two buildings offer distinct architectural points of interest for an outing focused on cultural history.

Castle park, the Kupa Valley and trails

At Zrinsko-Frankopan Castle in Severin na Kupi, the interior is not open for visits; check visitor information before your trip. Outside, walking paths lead from the castle rock down to the Kupa. The castle park has a viewpoint overlooking the river and the wooded valley. The park is protected as a monument of garden architecture. The castle and park thus offer two clearly distinct perspectives: the building forms part of the local streetscape when viewed from outside, while the paths and viewpoint draw your gaze towards the river landscape.

For outdoor activities in the Kupa Valley, the Riblje–Lesci trail runs for 2.6 kilometres through the valley and is suitable for hiking or cycling. There are eight rest areas with benches along the route; as facilities may change, it is advisable to check their condition before your visit. Another option is the first stage of the Camino Gorski Kotar, which runs from Kamačnik through Vrbovsko to Lukovdol and is about 17 kilometres long. In the Kamačnik area, the Panova staza thematic trail focuses on sound. Its five music education instruments include a gong, xylophone, horn, bells and a stream organ. The “Staza skulptura – Park mladih umjetnika Plemenitaš” sculpture trail features 16 sculptures made of wood and mixed techniques and can be visited year-round. Check local access conditions before your visit. The two trails offer different experiences: one centres on listening, the other on encountering sculptures outdoors.

Art and regional traditions

The Plemenitaš art workshop has been based in the premises of an old school since 1996 and is considered a unique cultural centre in Croatia. The villages of Zaumol, Plemenitaš, Zapeć, Blaževci and Štefanci along the Kupa are also considered notable examples of traditional architecture. In Gomirje, the monastery marks the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, Velika Gospojna, every year on 28 August with particular solemnity. Art, architectural styles and an annual feast day offer further ways to explore the culture of the wider travel area.
