The municipality is situated on a hilly plateau at an altitude of 300 to 350 metres. Sveti Petar u Šumi is at a road junction; from there, roads lead in five directions to neighbouring municipalities. Church and historical traces
The Church of St Peter and Paul in Sveti Petar u Šumi was completed and consecrated in 1755. Its organ, made by I. J. Eisl, dates from 1770 and is housed in a Riedl case. The side chapels feature Baroque gilded leather wall hangings of Venetian origin. The building’s history, instrument and wall decorations offer a specific insight into different aspects of sacred art. A pilgrimage tradition dates back to Christmas Eve 1721: at that time, the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa on the church’s main altar is said to have wept tears.
Around 1770, philosophical lectures were held at the Pauline monastery in Sveti Petar u Šumi. The Hrvatska čitaonica was founded on 22 April 1889 and opened on 19 May of the same year. Just under four weeks passed between its founding and opening.
Sausage tradition and event formats
The first Croatian Sausage House is a museum-gallery space where traditional sausages are presented using multimedia. It was completely renovated and opened in 2021. A Way of the Cross with stone sculptures
Father Danijel Hekić’s Way of the Cross is 4.2 kilometres long, was established in 2019 and comprises 14 stations featuring stone sculptures with sacred motifs. Unlike the church, whose history can be traced through its completion and furnishings, here the religious theme is divided into stations along a route. The route’s length and sculptures therefore provide two different points of reference for planning: its physical extent and its sacred content.
