Culture

Most of Hvar’s important cultural attractions are located in the historic old town and can be explored on foot. The painting “The Last Supper” by Mateo Ponzoni Pončun is displayed in the Franciscan Monastery. The summer residence of the poet Hanibal Lucić in Hvar is an example of Renaissance country-house architecture; it also houses the Hvar Heritage Museum and a landscaped garden. The Ivan Vučetić Museum of Mysteries is located in the house where Ivan Vučetić lived and worked during his lifetime in Hvar, in the center of the city of Hvar.

Fortica houses a collection of amphorae and offers panoramic views of Hvar, the Pakleni Islands, and the sunset. The Loggia in Hvar is a striking example of Renaissance architecture and was formerly the town courthouse. Hvar’s Cathedral of St. Stephen has a Renaissance-Baroque appearance, a bell tower, and a valuable art collection.

The Hvar Historic Theatre opened in 1612, is still active, and hosts performances, concerts, and cultural events throughout the year. It is considered the oldest public theater in Europe. The Arsenal Gallery is a collection within the Hvar Heritage Museum; its permanent exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, and prints from the museum’s holdings.

Nature

The Pakleni Islands, a group of around 20 islets and rocks off Hvar, offer destinations with beaches, swimming spots, coves, and secluded shores. As a significant landscape, the Pakleni Islands are protected and form part of the European ecological network safeguarding Posidonia seagrass, sea caves, reefs, and sandy seabeds.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Stari Grad Plain on the island of Hvar is a largely intact cultural landscape where the cultivation of grapes and olives has been preserved from Greek times to the present day.

Getting Around

Hvar is connected to the mainland in the Split area by ferry services, including catamarans that operate several times a day directly between Split and Hvar; travel by car ferry is via the Split–Stari Grad route. The signposted cycling route “Malo Grablje 710” runs from Hvar via Milna, Velo Grablje and Brusje back to Hvar.
