Municipality of Majur: Wool, local history and nature
Accommodation in Municipality of Majur
The Municipality of Majur offers a range of starting points for a trip: Woonko puts wool centre stage, the local history includes chapels, farmsteads and fortresses, and the HR2001342 Područje oko špilje Gradusa area is part of Natura 2000. This lets you choose whether to focus your stay on crafts, history or nature.
Wool and crafts at Woonko
Woonko – Centar vune Majur is open to all visitors by prior arrangement on every weekday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm; visits are guided by a specialist. If you plan to visit, make sure to book in advance and allow for this time window. The wool centre is therefore a practical element to include in your day’s plans.
Woonko runs workshops in wet and dry wool felting. The two types of felting give the craft theme a practical focus. There is also a video game featuring sheep for the youngest visitors. The venue thus combines an interest in wool with a playful touch for children, without taking away from its focus on crafts.
Chapels, farmsteads and fortresses
The area’s history is reflected in several different structures. In Gornja Meminska, the traditional farmstead at house number 2 is listed as immovable cultural heritage. In Svinica, a traditional wooden house is recorded in an official list from 2016 under registration number P-5353. Both records point to traditional architectural styles, while the chapels offer a further historical perspective.
A chapel in Svinica was built in 1846, and a chapel in Mračaj in 1888. The Chapel of St. Michael (Sv. Mihovila) also dates from the 19th century. Svinica Fortress is part of the area’s history as well: Ivan Lenković mentions it in a report from 1563; its demolition is dated to 1560. The wooden castle of Mračaj belonged to Count Blagaj and was demolished and burned down in 1559. The various construction dates and historical records show that the surviving themes range from chapels to fortifications.
Nature and the wider travel region
The HR2001342 Područje oko špilje Gradusa area is a Natura 2000 site associated with the Municipality of Majur. It provides a specific connection to nature alongside the craft and history themes. In the wider Banovina-Pounje travel region, which includes Majur, the landscape is shaped by the Una and Sunja rivers, water springs and forests. The hilly landscape of the wider region invites visitors to cycle, stroll and hike; this regional setting should be distinguished from the individual local sights.
The wider Sisak-Moslavina County offers further points of interest. Sisak lies at the confluence of the Kupa, Sava and Odra rivers; visitors there can take a boat trip from the mouth of the Odra to where the Kupa flows into the Sava. The Muzej Moslavine Kutina includes a gallery department as well as departments of cultural history, archaeology and ethnography. It is housed in a former country manor of the Counts Erdődy, built in the mid-18th century. These regional examples add river landscapes and museum culture to the picture of Majur.
Choose the right focus for your stay
When looking for a holiday rental, you can start by considering which of these themes you want to shape your stay. If you would like to visit Woonko, plan for a weekday visit and book in advance. For a history-focused stay, the chapels, traditional farmstead and historic fortresses offer a range of subjects to explore. If you would also like to include cycling, hiking or other cultural attractions, you can add the wider Banovina-Pounje travel region and Sisak-Moslavina County to your plans. This way, you can choose your destination according to the interests you actually want to pursue.
