Municipality of Šodolovci: Churches, Archaeology and Folklore
Accommodation in Municipality of Šodolovci
The Municipality of Šodolovci lies in the expansive lowlands in the southeast of Osijek-Baranja County; medieval churches, archaeological traces and living traditions are among its defining features. Koprivna tells of a long religious and historical past, while church architecture and folklore shape Silaš’s cultural identity. If you are looking for a holiday rental in the Municipality of Šodolovci, you can plan your stay around whether church and archaeological history or local customs are of particular interest.
Medieval traces in Koprivna
The medieval church of Male Gospe, the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, stands in the Orthodox cemetery in Koprivna. Its present-day Baroque appearance dates from its restoration in 1751. At the same time, older features remain in the building: four medieval windows and the structure of an original Romanesque portal, identified at the present-day south portal. The church has a single nave and a rectangular plan; a slightly narrower, semicircular apse adjoins the main space.
The church and cemetery are located on the plateau of the medieval archaeological site of Udovičko polje, which is protected as an archaeological site. Archaeological finds there indicate a medieval settlement with an associated cemetery. Another archaeological site, Vodenčina, is listed in the Croatian Register of Cultural Goods under code Z-4826. Settlement finds there date from the Early and Middle Neolithic and are probably attributed to the Sopot culture. Together, these sites offer different insights: Udovičko polje represents a medieval settlement, while Vodenčina tells of a much earlier history of settlement.
Churches and folklore in Silaš
The Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah in Silaš was completed in 2013. The newly built church combines the Serbo-Byzantine style with two domes; the carved iconostasis was made by Dragan Šaponja of Kolut. Regular services have been held there since its completion. The two church sites thus differ in their building histories: in Koprivna, medieval building elements and the Baroque restoration of 1751 are defining features, whereas the church in Silaš is a 21st-century building.
The Zora cultural and arts association ensemble is also part of Silaš’s cultural identity. It was founded in 2006 to preserve the traditions and culture of Serbs in Croatia. Around 50 members are active in a folklore group and a women’s singing group. At performances, the ensemble presents some of its twelve stylised choreographies and three staged portrayals of customs. For travellers interested in dance, singing and inherited customs, this focus offers a different perspective on the municipality than its historic churches and archaeological sites.
Traditions and guidance for your stay
Silašijada is conceived as a showcase of traditional folklore, customs, handicrafts and old sports. The old-sports competition takes place in front of the cultural centre in Silaš; afterwards, participants walk through the village and visit the Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah. In June 2025, a cultural and artistic programme featuring folklore groups was held at the cultural centre in Silaš as part of Silašijada. In Ada, the Seoska idila association began organising themed exhibitions of products made from natural materials.
The municipality lies within the Drava and Danube catchment area, or the Vuka catchment area. County road 4130 is also relevant for getting around the municipality: it runs through Šodolovci and Petrova Slatina between the D7 and D518. When choosing a holiday rental, you might first consider what you would like your stay to focus on: the churches and archaeological sites, folklore in Silaš, or visiting the municipality’s individual settlements.
