Drenje: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Drenje lies on the eastern foothills of Krndija, along the road connecting Đakovo with the Mandićevac wine-growing area and the Borovik excursion destination. The village is considered a typical Slavonian village: it is laid out along a main road with two side streets and two sokaks. Those who choose Drenje as their place to stay may want to rent a holiday apartment there.
Landscape
Just 200 metres from Drenje lies Kosinac, a natural lake surrounded by nature and abundant greenery. It covers approximately 50 hectares, reaches a depth of 7 metres and is around 1 kilometre long.
West of Drenje is Borovik, an artificial lake created in 1978 by damming the riverbed of the Vuka. Borovik covers approximately 160 hectares and is promoted as a destination for carp fishing; carp weighing up to 30 kilograms are mentioned in this context.
Getting Around
The Vučje Glave–Borovik hiking section is 8 kilometres long, takes about two hours and has an elevation difference of 80 metres. The area also includes the Planinarski dom Borovik, which can accommodate up to 20 hikers or scouts and is open by arrangement.
The Borovik Mountain Lodge is checkpoint KT-16 on the Slavonski Planinarski Put and is located next to the road to Lake Borovik. For cyclists, the “Od Drenja do Borovika” route runs from Drenje via Mandićevac to Lake Borovik and into the forests of Krndija. Its starting point is in front of the Drenje municipal office.
History and Culture
The Church of Saint Michael stands in the present-day settlement area of Drenje. Before Ottoman rule, Drenje also had a Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian.
The history of the place is also documented in medieval records: a document from 1406 mentions the Drenje hill under the name “Drenowch mons”. A document from 1434 lists Drenje as an episcopal estate.
