Culture and History

The old town of Perušić had square walls with watchtowers at three corners. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a medieval Gothic church built between the 13th and 14th centuries. During Ottoman rule, it was converted into a mosque.

The municipality is home to the Kosinjski most, a 70-metre-long stone bridge over the Lika that connects Gornji and Donji Kosinj. Kosinj is also associated with the printing of the Misal po zakonu rimskog dvora on 22 February 1483. Pisani kamen is recorded in connection with a dispute settlement dating from Roman times, documented on an inscribed stone.

Nature

The Grabovača Cave Park comprises eight caves and one pit and is the only cave park in Europe. The Lika is a 78-kilometre-long underground river. Samograd Cave contains two stalactite bridges, is considered illuminated and was opened to visitors in 1889.

The Jela Car fir is 42.5 metres tall and has a trunk circumference of 5.42 metres.

Trails and Activities

The “Man and Karst” educational trail passes three caves and one pit and is 3.5 kilometres long. In Grabovača Cave Park, it reaches a viewing platform at an altitude of 743 metres. The 750-metre-long Fauna educational trail provides information about protected and endangered Natura 2000 species.

The Klisa educational trail begins in the centre of Perušić and includes a viewing platform overlooking the old town of Perušić. At Grabovača Cave Park, paintball and archery are offered on the banks of the Lika.

Walking, hiking, cycling and kayaking are listed for the Perušić area. Seasonal options include swimming in the Lika, rafting on Lake Kruščica and fishing in the Lika; hunting under licence is also listed for the surrounding area. Swimming is possible in Lake Kruščica.
