Slunj: Vacation Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Slunjčica is protected as a significant landscape; the protection covers its entire course as well as one kilometre of the Korana River.

Nature

At Rastoke, the Slunjčica spreads across 23 waterfalls before flowing into the Korana. The river is a habitat for the rare creeping celery (Apium repens) and forms part of the Natura 2000 ecological network.

Culture

Slunj was already recorded as a fortified town in 1390. Until 1409, there was a settlement or market called Slunj on the opposite side of the Slunjčica gorge. Slunj Town Park was created in 1871, together with new administrative, public and religious buildings.

A stone fountain dating from 1892 stands on Trg Zrinskih i Frankopana. The square also features a monument to Milan Neralić, the first Croatian to win an Olympic bronze medal in fencing.

Rastoke is listed in the Croatian Register of Cultural Goods as a cultural-historical rural ensemble. The oldest mill in the Rastoke watermill settlement was built in the 17th century. In 1962, Rastoke had a total of 22 mills, four fulling mills, seven wash baskets and 28 houses with associated outbuildings. For 2025, Dani mlina in Rastoke is listed as an autumn event celebrating the beginning of autumn and the heritage of milling.

At Slovin Unique-Rastoke, visitors can take part in creating souvenirs from natural materials. The Slovin Unique Estate in Rastoke houses a small ethnographic collection showcasing the lives of the region’s ancestors.

A hiking route passes a fortification from the Frankopan era above the Slunjčica, probably dating back to the 14th century. On a walking route in Slunj, Napoleon’s warehouse is listed as a historical attraction.

The nearby surroundings of Slunj also offer visitors an introduction to farm work, hay and livestock-feed collection, the production of winter supplies, and the gathering of forest fruits at OPG Novković in Točak. OPG Novković also produces eight varieties of organic cheese there under the collective name “Koranski sir”, using traditional technology.

Routes and Activities

The educational trail along the Slunjčica is part of the Šuma i vode excursion route and runs upstream from Rastoke to the source of the Slunjčica. Natura Viva offers one-hour educational tours along the Slunjčica. The Slunj-Rastoke guide is divided into five visitor zones and lists routes ranging from 1 km to 6.5 km.

The Slunj cycling network covers more than 100 kilometres of routes. Seven marked routes are divided into the difficulty levels easy, moderately challenging and challenging.

The Jareb Mill in Rastoke is open to visitors, who can watch grain being milled and buy several types of flour.

Water and Events

The upstream bathing area of Kotlac is about a 15-minute walk from the town’s main bathing area and includes shallow natural pools with cascades. RastRaft takes place annually in Slunj as part of the European Rafting Cup.
