Ogulin: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Around 1500, Bernardin Frankopan built the Frankopan Fortress above the Dobra Gorge. Ogulin is also located about 2 km from the Zagreb–Split motorway.

Culture and History

In the Zavičajni muzej, a memorial room commemorates Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić; an alpine exhibition is dedicated to mountaineering and alpinism in Croatia. The archaeological exhibition includes finds from the Japodes and Romans discovered in the wider area around Ogulin. The Chapel of Saint Bernardin is a restored cultural heritage structure with a clearly recognizable Gothic character; the tombstone of Stjepan II Frankopan is displayed there.

Ivanina kuća bajke is a multimedia and interactive visitor centre dedicated to fairy tales and imaginative creativity. Creative educational programmes for children and adults are organised there throughout the year: the topics range from storytelling, literary and visual expression through film, performing and applied arts to design. The Ogulinski festival bajke is a cultural and artistic event in Ogulin, during which streets and squares become festival stages; the programme includes theatre, street theatre, storytelling and creative workshops. Bajkovita zima uz ognjište is a traditional storytelling event organised by Ivanina kuća bajke in Ogulin.

Nature and Water

Đulin ponor, a hydrogeological natural monument, lies in the centre of Ogulin. The Dobra disappears underground there; the adjoining Medvedica Cave is part of Croatia’s longest speleological feature. Sabljaci is a 170-hectare reservoir on the Zagorska Mrežnica and is locally known as the “Ogulin Sea”. Swimming, rowing, windsurfing, walking, cycling and rowing regattas are available there. The Dobra is suitable for swimming in Ogulin.

In the immediate surroundings, hiking routes run from Ogulin towards Klek, with a walking time of around three hours. Further marked trails lead towards Kneja and Stožac; the vertical rock face of Klek is used by mountaineers. The rocks at Đulin ponor are considered a challenge for mountaineers. In the immediate surroundings, Rupećica Cave is associated with the discovery of an olm. In the immediate surroundings, Klek is considered a botanical reserve with rich Tertiary flora.

Ogulin’s themed routes include the Ruta bajke and a botanical educational trail on Klek. Ogulin has two marked regional cycling routes with a combined length of 131 km. Almost 100 km of local cycling routes are connected to these regional routes. The cycling facilities include Ribarići Bike Park.

Ogulinski kiseli kupus, also known as Ogulinsko kiselo zelje, is registered as a product with a protected designation of origin. It is produced and processed in the town of Ogulin and in the municipality of Josipdol.
