Vishovgrad: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The historical remains preserved in Vishovgrad include the remains of a Roman fortress at Chukata Peak in the territory of Vishovgrad. In addition, a stone sarcophagus of a Roman priest and his wife was found there.

Nature

In the wider Pavlikeni area, the Negovanka Canyon features a wooded gorge with successive cascades, waterfalls, plunge pools and rock walls up to 80 metres high. Momin Skok Waterfall is protected as a natural landmark together with the canyon.

The lands of Vishovgrad are part of the Emen Natura 2000 protected area, code BG0000216. The Zarapovo geocomplex is located near Vishovgrad, about 3 km in the direction of Emen. Zarapovo is one of Bulgaria’s 50 lesser-known tourist sites.

History

In the wider Pavlikeni area, Kanladere is associated with the battles fought by the detachment led by Hadzhi Dimitar and Stefan Karadja. A monument to Stefan Karadja stands at Kanladere, where he is believed to have been captured. The Kanladere battle monument is located about 3.5 kilometres southwest of Vishovgrad, at the site also known as Kyrvav dol. After the Battle of Kanladere, Pop Balcho Kolev buried the fallen fighters from the detachments of Hadzhi Dimitar and Stefan Karadja in the churchyard of the old village church.

A monument to fallen fighters stands in the schoolyard of Vishovgrad. Also located there is the Pantheon of the Fallen Chetniks of Hadzhi Dimitar and Stefan Karadja, at the site of the former village church. It was built in 2003 with donated funds and the work of local residents. The memorial plaque for Simeon Sabev in Vishovgrad marks the house of a rebel from Pop Hariton’s detachment who died at Dryanovo Monastery. A memorial plaque for Pop Balcho is located in the centre of Vishovgrad, near the Orthodox Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah.

Bacho Kiro began his teaching career in Vishovgrad and received the nickname Bacho there. Vishovgrad was the birthplace of Mircho Voivode, who established Bulgarian rule in Tarnovo for two months. The mother of Bulgarian National Revival poet Petko Slaveykov was born in Vishovgrad.

Culture

An ethnographic museum dedicated to local life and traditions has been established in the community centre. Vishovgrad is also home to the Orthodox Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah. The Radi Fichev Community Centre in Vishovgrad houses a public collection with materials on the history of the settlement from antiquity to the present day.

Guided visits to the Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah in Vishovgrad can be arranged through the Vishovgrad public historical collection with the permission of the priests.

Trails

A hiking trail leads through the Vishovgrad area from Kanladere to Dalgi dol; anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Vishovgrad can continue their accommodation search afterwards. The trails towards Dalgi dol and Kanladere are maintained by the Rositsa tourist association from Pavlikeni. The trail to Zarapovo Waterfall begins near a car park and takes about 20 minutes there and back.
