The ethnographic exhibition at the Historical Museum of Provadia presents traditional rural interiors from villages in the Provadia area. It also includes a model of a “singing” cart associated with local crafts from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The medieval exhibition preserves more than 4,000 medieval objects and highlights the Late Antique and medieval fortress of Provat–Ovech. The museum also displays medieval jewellery, Christian symbols, household objects from the fortress, and Byzantine and Bulgarian medieval coins.

Archaeology

Provadia-Solnitsata used an early European salt-production technology in which spring brine was evaporated in ceramic vessels. The settlement mound preserves a settlement dating from 5600 to 4350 BC. The site is described as a settlement with three successive Chalcolithic stone fortification systems; no known counterpart for these has been recorded in Europe of the 5th millennium BC. The prehistoric salt trade associated with Provadia-Solnitsata extended along the corridors of the eastern Balkans, the Provadiyska River, and the Black Sea coast. Provadia-Solnitsata is accessible to tourists during most of the year, provided that the weather is suitable for an outdoor archaeological site. History

The Ovech Fortress was designated an immovable cultural monument of national importance in 2008. During the Second Bulgarian Empire, Ovech and the town of Provadia were important economic, administrative, military, and religious centres of the region. The fortress preserves the foundations of three medieval churches, three entrances, details of two towers, 13 cisterns, Late Antique and medieval building remains, roads, and traces of residential and commercial spaces.

Paths

Access routes to the Ovech Fortress lead from the west and east, including fortified sections, stairs, and a tourist trail. The western entrance can be reached from Provadia via an original spiral staircase with 111 steps. The main starting points for routes to the Ovech Fortress are approximately a 20- to 30-minute walk or a five-minute taxi ride from Provadia railway and bus station. Guided visits to the Ovech Fortress are offered by the Historical Museum of Provadia.
