In Starozagorski bani, hot mineral water is used for spa treatments and balneotherapy. The thermal waters emerge from three springs in Triassic dolomite and limestone. The water is considered hot at 42 °C; its pH value is 9.4, and its total mineralisation is 0.55 g/l.

Nature

Starozagorski bani lies on the southern slopes of Sarnena Gora at an altitude of 370 metres above sea level. The town has a transitional continental climate with a slight mountain influence.

In the spa resort, the mineral water emerges at around 40 °C; its flow rate is stated as 13.6 litres per second. The public bathing facility uses mineral water at around 40 °C.

There are several eco-trails and marked routes in Sarnena Sredna Gora.

History

Remains from the Thracian and Roman periods can be found in Starozagorski bani. They include bathing rooms and pools made of translucent marble.

In the centre of the spa resort is a prehistoric settlement mound dating from the sixth to the fourth millennium BC, next to the mineral springs and the bathing building.

The Roman baths next to the settlement mound are dated to AD 162–163 by a preserved inscription.

Culture

The National Thracian Folklore Gathering “Bogorodichna Stapka”, held regularly in Starozagorski bani every August, serves to preserve Bulgarian folk traditions and customs. Its stages are set up in the town’s central parks.

The programme includes tastings of traditional “grandmothers’ recipes” and an exhibition of Bulgarian traditional dishes. There is also a craft bazaar called “Street of Crafts”, featuring demonstrations of handicraft skills.

Surroundings

About one kilometre north of the spa resort centre lies the natural rock formation Bogorodichna Stapka. It features a rock depression resembling a human footprint, in which the water does not dry up. A small chapel called Rozhdestvo Bogorodichno stands beside it.
