Gurkovo: Rivers, Hiking Trails and Cultural History

Gurkovo is in central Bulgaria, in Stara Zagora Province, on the eastern edge of the Rose Valley and at the southern end of the Republic Pass, also known as Hainboaz. The municipality therefore combines a striking location with riverside scenery, opportunities for hiking and cultural history. The Lazova and Radova rivers rise in the Balkan Mountains, flow through Gurkovo and join the Tundzha. The Zhrebchevo Reservoir is also located on the southern edge of the municipality.
Hiking the Lyava Reka–Predela Trail
If you would like to combine your stay with a longer hike, the Lyava Reka–Predela eco-trail offers a specific route to plan around: the trail is 15 km long, with a stated duration of 8 hours. It is connected to the international Kom–Emine hiking trail. The distance and time estimate help you plan the hike as a standalone activity rather than treating it as just a short excursion.
Along the eco-trail, there are three rest shelters with barbecue areas, as well as a well with cold drinking water. The Donkey Museum also has an archaeological section with finds from the area around Gurkovo. They date from the Thracian, Roman, Slavic, Proto-Bulgarian and medieval periods. The Church of Sveti Dimitar in Gurkovo is also a cultural monument built in 1860. Near the village of Konare, a Roman villa rustica dating from the 2nd to 4th centuries was excavated in 2017. The features found there include a pool, a steam bath with underfloor heating, three changing rooms and a hot-air heating system supplied by external fireplaces. A Riverside Spot and Getting There
The Lazovo recreation area on the Lazova River in Gurkovo offers a different way to spend time outdoors. It includes a bridge, a gazebo for 20 to 30 people, tables and a barbecue area. There is also a children’s playground with swings and a sandbox, as well as a large meadow for camping, sports and cycling. For families, the specific play facilities and the meadow’s different uses are particularly useful points to consider; they set Lazovo apart from a hike with a defined route length.
Transport connections also help put Gurkovo in context. Main road I-6 runs through the municipality along the Sofia–Kazanlak–Gurkovo–Burgas route. Road II-55 crosses the Republic Pass along the Ruse–Veliko Tarnovo–Gurkovo–Svilengrad route. The Sofia–Burgas railway line also runs through the municipality, parallel to I-6.
