Bunovo is located on the western edge of the Zlatishko Field between the Stara Planina and Galabets; the Bunovchitsa River flows through the village. The local industrial history, which is connected with historical ironworking, includes the remains of a forge in the village and a charcoal kiln on the banks of the Bunovchitsa.

Culture and History

The St Theodore Tyron Church in Bunovo was built in 1834. A cell school was also established in Bunovo at the same time. In 2017, the church was designated a cultural heritage property of local significance for its architectural, constructional, and artistic value. Theatre, dance, and musical performances were held at the community centre in Bunovo.

In the surrounding area, the monument at Baba Peak commemorates the crossing of the Balkan Mountains from Etropole towards Bunovo by General Dandeville's column on 28 and 29 December 1877.

The protected area of Marinov Dol is located in the territory of Bunovo; it covers 421.869 decares. Marinov Dol protects diverse beech forests and high-mountain spruce plantations. The area also protects nesting habitats of rare and protected bird species. The Bunovo Balkan offers opportunities for recreation and hunting.

Routes and Connections

A hiking trail leads from Bunovo along the Bunovska River towards the summit of Zvezdec. The Bunovo Bridge is part of the Sub-Balkan railway line. A bus route running daily year-round between Anton, Bunovo, and Anton includes a stop in the centre of Bunovo.
