Culture

The Church of St. George in Kostenets was consecrated in 1932. Its altar and bishop's throne feature remarkable wood carvings. The Church of St. John the Baptist in Gorna Vasilitsa contains frescoes from the period of the National Revival and valuable iconography.

The Stenos Fortress near Trayanovi Vrata is a historical cultural heritage site on the saddle between the Eledzhik and Golak mountain ridges. The fortress information centre offers guided explanations, an exhibition hall, a presentation room, as well as souvenirs and maps of the fortress.

Traditions

In Momin Prohod, the craft workshop at the Geo Milev Community Centre preserves traditional local crafts and passes them on to children and visitors. Visitors can take part in the activities, including demonstrations of weaving on a loom and knitting. They can also buy handmade local souvenirs.

The workshop also presents local cuisine featuring banitsa, pogacha, tikvenik, and kachamak.

Trails

Kostenets Waterfall serves as a starting point for mountain trails to Belmeken in the northern Rila Mountains. The Kostenets area offers mountain tourism amid forested landscapes. Visitors can also visit the Gurgulitsa and Belmeken mountain huts in the Kostenets area.

Mirovo railway station can be reached by road from Kostenets or Ihtiman. From there, the marked route to Trayanovi Vrata takes approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.
