Culture

The Eastern Orthodox Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Sarantsi was built in 1896 and extensively renovated in 2014.

A Sirni Zagovezni celebration with Kukeri was scheduled to take place in Sarantsi on March 17, 2024. A Kukeri celebration for Sirni Zagovezni was scheduled there for February 22, 2026.

Landscape

Sarantsi lies in the Saranska Basin, which the municipality describes as the westernmost of the Sub-Balkan basins. Thracian burial mounds have been found near Sarantsi; they have not yet been researched. The Sub-Balkan Road passes through Sarantsi. The railway line includes a Stolnik–Sarantsi section.

History

The former name of Sarantsi was Tashkensen; this name is recorded in Turkish registers from 1728. On December 19, 1877, Russian troops breached the Ottoman defenses near Sarantsi. This helped create the conditions for clearing the Arabakonak Pass and liberating Sofia.

Sarantsi also has a memorial park commemorating the Battle of Tashkesen; the fighting is dated to December 19, 1877. In Pereste, there is a monument to soldiers of the 53rd Volyn Infantry Regiment, classified as a historical site of national importance.

Sarantsi also has two mass graves classified as historical sites of local importance. Sarantsi railway station is likewise classified as a historical site of local importance. Near Gerena, twelve burial mounds are classified as archaeological sites of national importance.
