Bozhurishte Between Nature and History
Accommodation in Bozhurishte
In Bozhurishte, protected habitats and forests sit alongside churches, archaeological traces and active pursuits. Horse riding and fishing offer a different focus from an excursion to a fortress or historic church—providing a varied basis for planning your trip.
Nature and Orientation
The municipality of Bozhurishte includes 63.2 hectares of the “Meshtitsa” Natura 2000 protected area in the lands of Delyan and Zlatusha. Several valuable habitats of European importance are protected there. The land around Herakovo has both pine and broadleaf forests. Protected habitats and different types of forest therefore offer two distinct nature themes.
The municipality’s tourist division distinguishes a central, a northern and a southern zone along the Sofia–Bozhurishte–Breznik and Sofia–Kalotina corridors. This division provides a geographical frame of reference. When planning your trip, you can also consider whether nature, cultural history or active pursuits should take centre stage.
Churches, Archaeology and Medieval Traces
Roman steles were discovered in the courtyard of the “St George the Victorious” church in Prolesha. An unpaved Roman road was identified south of Prolesha. There are also reports of a Roman silver coin hoard in Prolesha, described as the largest in Bulgaria. An existing building on the site of the former “Bozhurishte” airfield is described as Sofia’s first airfield.
Churches also shape the history of the local area: Rosoman is home to an old, restored church dedicated to Saint Nedelya. The “St George” church in Hrabarsko is considered a stop worth visiting; it features panoramic views and an extensive park. The medieval “Kaleto” fortress is located in the lands of Hrabarsko, in the Sovat area, on a steep ridge. It has not been developed for visitors or landscaped—a distinction worth bearing in mind when planning a visit.
Activities and Green Breaks
At the “General Krum Lekarski” equestrian centre in the town of Bozhurishte, horse enthusiasts can take part in equestrian sports and training sessions. Check current booking options in advance. Fishing is possible at the “Hrabarsko” reservoir; check local rules and access before your visit.
In Bozhurishte’s main tourist area, “Orlite” Park is among the most important tourist attractions. The “Bozhura” Garden has a children’s playground and food and drink establishments. For families, the playground is a practical point of reference when planning the day. As individual businesses may change, it is worth checking the current selection before planning a stop for refreshments.
One example of a time-specific events programme is the “Peony and Flower Festival” in Bozhurishte, held from 30 May to 1 June 2025: crafts were presented, and a pottery workshop using a potter’s wheel was planned for children on 30 May. Check the relevant programme for future dates.
Choose a Holiday Apartment to Suit Your Trip
Horse riding and fishing call for a different day plan than churches, archaeological traces or the fortress. Nature is another focus. Before searching for a holiday apartment, consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay. This way, you can choose accommodation to suit your trip rather than look for a one-size-fits-all recommendation for the entire municipality.
