Razgrad Province offers several ways to shape your trip: in Razgrad, museum collections and buildings take centre stage; at Sveshtari, Thracian history; and in Sboryanowo, marked trails. The Voden Hunting Estate, in turn, combines ancient forests and reservoirs with opportunities for hunting and recreation. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in the region, you can start by asking what you want your trip to focus on: culture, archaeology or nature.

Museums and architectural history in Razgrad

The Regional Historical Museum in Razgrad has four thematic exhibitions: an archaeological exhibition, an ethnographic exhibition, the museum collection of Stanka and Nikola Ikonomov, and the house museum of composer Dimitar Nenov. The archaeological exhibition comprises movable cultural artefacts from the Late Palaeolithic to the end of the Second Bulgarian Empire. This broad span of time gives your exploration of the past a clear focus; the ethnographic exhibition and the other museum themes complement it with different perspectives.

Razgrad’s architectural history also spans several periods. The Clock Tower was built in the 18th century and converted to its present form in 1864. The Church of St Nicholas the Wonderworker dates from 1860 and was remodelled in 1903. Construction of the Ibrahim Pasha Mosque began in 1530 on the orders of Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha. If you are interested in historic buildings, you can include these different dates and building histories in your trip without grouping them into a single period.

Another distinctive landmark in Razgrad is Momina Cheshma: a cast-iron sculpture of a girl in antique clothing, with a hydria on her shoulder. It stands on a stone pedestal. The Professor Iliya Petrov Gallery holds more than 3,500 works of fine art. Together, these places offer different cultural points of interest, from a single work of art to an extensive collection.

Sveshtari and the Sboryanowo Reserve

The Thracian royal tomb of Sveshtari was built in the first quarter of the 3rd century BC and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985. It can be reached from Sveshtari or Malki Porovets via a maintained asphalt road that passes through the Sboryanowo Historical and Archaeological Reserve. About 7 km away, in the municipality of Isperih, there is a visitor centre with parking, souvenirs, and informational and promotional materials.

Specific conditions apply to visits: access to the royal tomb is restricted from March to November; it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Admission is charged, and guided tours are available in English, Russian and German. Take the closure days and restricted access into account when planning your visit. The combination of an archaeological site and practical visitor information makes Sveshtari a distinct focus for a culture-oriented trip.

In the western part of the Ludogorsko Plateau, the Sboryanowo Historical and Archaeological Reserve stretches along the Krapinets River valley, between Malki Porovets and Sveshtari in the municipality of Isperih. A marked hiking trail leads from the visitor centre to Demir Baba Teke. The area also has a marked cross-country cycling route. If you prefer to get around on foot, the hiking trail gives you a clear point of reference; by bicycle, you can follow the designated cycling route. No information about route length or duration is provided.

Landscape and regional orientation

The Voden Hunting Estate covers 14,469 hectares in Razgrad Municipality. Ancient forests and clear reservoirs characterise the area; the estate also offers opportunities for hunting and recreation. Voden therefore provides a different focus from museums and archaeological sites.

For getting around the region, Road II-23 runs from west to east. It connects Kubrat, Zavet and Isperih with Ruse and the Danube Bridge. The subpages for the individual areas are available under Getsovo, Isperih, Razgrad and Tzar Kaloyan.
