Branipole combines visible traces of a long local history with religious buildings and village traditions. The Orthodox Church of Saints Constantine and Helena was built in 1927–1928 and stands opposite the town hall in the village center. A small elevation in Branipole is the still-visible trace of a prehistoric Thracian settlement.
Culture and History
The Chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel is located opposite Branipole Cemetery. The village is also home to the Catholic Church of Saint Felix of Cantalice. Branipole was formerly called Ahlanovo; there are two possible interpretations of this name.
The local history book “Branipole, a piece of history between the Rhodopes and Thrace” was offered for purchase through the village library.
Village Life and Traditions
Branipole’s village festival and traditional fair take place on 21 May. The village also takes part in a traditional Masopust carnival featuring Kukeri, the ringing of bells, folk festivities, and a fire.
At a traditional grape-pruning celebration near Branipole, drums, horo dancing, wine, and meze are part of the festivities. Branipole was also the venue for the third edition of the national folklore festival “Folklorna Palitra”.
Paths and Routes
A road route to Hiza Zdravets passes through Branipole and then continues to Galabovo and Tsar Kaloyan.
A named cycling route “Plovdiv–Branipole–Belashtitsa–Galabovo–Hiza Zdravets–Koprivkite–Yavorovo–Kuklen–Brestnik” is 55 km long, runs mostly along asphalt and dirt roads, and has a low to moderate technical difficulty level. On this route, the ascent begins in Branipole and leads to Koprivkite after approximately 19 km and 1,100 meters of elevation gain.
Cuisine and Festivals
At the celebration of the community center’s centenary, pan-cooked banitsa was offered as a local specialty. An announced temple festival for Saints Constantine and Helena in Branipole was to include a liturgy and a communal kurban meal.
