Pleven: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Pleven combines a distinctive military landscape with the extensive Kaylaka Park and a museum documenting the history of wine. A central site in the city’s history is the Pleven Panorama Epopee 1877 in Skobelev Park, on the battlefield where the fiercest fighting took place during the Third Assault on Pleven. The panorama comprises four halls: an introductory hall, a panorama hall, a diorama hall and a final hall. Its exhibition combines military busts, 19th-century lithographs, works of art, weapons and uniforms. The Pleven Panorama Epopee 1877 is accessible by road and public transport; there is also a car park.

Culture and History

The Skobelev Park Museum includes an ossuary containing the remains of soldiers from General Skobelev’s formation who died during the Third Assault on Pleven. Skobelev Park in Pleven was established in 1904 as a memorial to Russian soldiers who fell in the fighting on 30 August 1877. The chapel-mausoleum “St George the Victorious” was built between 1903 and 1907 in memory of Russian and Romanian soldiers who were killed in the fighting around Pleven during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 to 1878.

The “Tsar Liberator Alexander II” House Museum presents episodes from the Russo-Turkish War and the Siege of Pleven. The Regional Historical Museum has an open-air exhibition in a 37-decare park.

Nature and Active Recreation

Kaylaka Park is located 6 km south of Pleven in the karst valley of the Tuchenitsa River. The park offers walking paths, a lake with rowboats and pedal boats, tennis courts, children’s playgrounds, swimming pools and reservoirs. Its cliffs, which are more than 20 metres high, are used for climbing. Kaylaka Park is also a protected area with characteristic plant species as well as birds and mammals listed in Bulgaria’s Red Book.

The Pleven Tourist Information Centre names Kaylaka Park and the Chernelka Nature Reserve as nearby options for active recreation and tourism.

Wine

The Museum of Wine in Pleven is located in Kaylaka Park opposite the Totlebenov Val dam. Its historical hall presents wine-making objects from the time of the ancient Thracians, Greeks and Romans to the present day. The Museum of Wine also offers wine tastings conducted by a specialist as a short sommelier course.
