Pleven: Archaeology, Art and Walks
Accommodation in Pleven
Pleven offers several ways to divide your day between culture and activity: archaeological traces at the Storgozia Fortress, museums and galleries, a tasting at the Wine Museum, and walking opportunities in Kaylaka Park. There are two viewing platforms on the roof of the Panorama “Pleven Epopee 1877.” For planning, one simple question is worth considering: would you rather focus on history and art, or on outdoor trails?
Archaeological Traces and Memorial Sites
At the Storgozia Fortress, the fortification system, an early Christian basilica and a horreum have been preserved and restored. The basilica dates from the 4th century and measures 45.20 metres in length and 22.20 metres in width. Ceramics, weapons and coins from Storgozia and its necropolis indicate that the fortified settlement existed until the end of the 6th century. The site therefore combines visible architectural remains with a historical interpretation cautiously drawn from the finds.
The Skobelev Park Museum has a different focus: it includes a brotherhood mound with an ossuary and a marble sarcophagus containing the remains of Russian soldiers from General M. D. Skobelev’s unit. The grounds also feature the restored Turkish redoubt “Issa aga,” nine brotherhood mounds and monuments commemorating fallen heroes. These elements give the memorial site a tangible form.
Museums and Art in Pleven
The Regional Historical Museum offers exhibitions on archaeology and ethnography, Bulgarian history from the 15th to the 19th century, recent and contemporary history, Gena Dimitrova, and natural history. Its architecturally notable building is designated a cultural monument of national importance. The themes therefore range from early finds to more recent history and natural history.
At the “Tsar Alexander II the Liberator” House Museum, you can see Tsar Alexander II’s hussar uniform and personal belongings of General M. D. Skobelev. The authentic furnishings have been preserved in the guest room where Tsar Alexander II was received. Here, the museum presents history through specific objects and a preserved room. Visitors particularly interested in exhibits will find this a different approach from Storgozia, where architectural remains and archaeological finds take centre stage.
The art galleries also offer different points of interest. The “Svetlin Rusev Donation Collection” Art Gallery is housed in a former bathhouse designated a cultural monument of national importance for its architecture. A distinct chapter in Pleven’s art history is the donation by the artist Svetlin Rusev, who was born in Pleven: in 1984, he gave his hometown 322 works from his personal collection, including paintings and sculptures.
The Iliya Beshkov Art Gallery houses more than 1,200 works. It is also a centre for established art events, including the National Biennial of Small-Format Visual Arts in Pleven, the international Fodar Photography Biennial and the Allianz Bulgaria National Competition. “Night at the Gallery” and the international “Kaylaka” plein-air event are also part of its programme. In addition, it hosts art salons, chamber concerts, recitals, conferences and symposia. Gallery visits can therefore be combined with different kinds of cultural events.
Tastings, Views and Walks
At the Wine Museum, the tasting consists of a short sommelier course led by a knowledgeable instructor. This gives the visit a clear focus: wine is introduced as part of a guided tasting. Tourists can access two viewing platforms on the roof of the Panorama “Pleven Epopee 1877.” The visits therefore offer different experiences: a tasting led by an expert or a climb to the platforms.
For walks, Kaylaka Park, close to the city of Pleven, offers beautiful avenues. The Chernelka eco-trail has a different starting point: it can be accessed from either the village of Gortalovo or the village of Kartozhabene. If you are planning nature experiences, you can take this information into account when choosing your route, without treating Kaylaka and Chernelka as the same place.
Accommodation and Practical Information
When looking for a holiday apartment in Pleven, your trip’s different points of interest can help guide your decision. Museums, galleries and Storgozia lend themselves to an itinerary focused on culture and history; Kaylaka and access to the Chernelka eco-trail are options for walks. When choosing accommodation, check its location in relation to the places you plan to visit, and plan your routes accordingly.
One specific transport note applies to guests and customers of Central Mall Pleven: important public transport stops are available to them, connecting neighbourhoods, the bus station and the railway station with the city centre. Routes and stops may change, so check the current connection before travelling.
