Vetren: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Emporion Pistiros is located in the Vetren area on the left bank of the Maritsa River, in the Upper Thracian Plain. Anyone considering Vetren as a travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.

Location

Vetren lies at the exit of the Trajan's Gate–Palanka Pass, on both sides of the Selko Gorge.

Archaeology

Excavations at Emporion Pistiros uncovered part of the eastern fortification wall, including a gate, bastion, and tower. The settlement is dated from the first half of the 5th century BC to the beginning of the 2nd century BC.

The Thracian Tomb near Vetren dates from the 4th century BC and directly borders Emporion Pistiros. It can be visited by prior arrangement through the archaeological museum.

Bona Mansio lies on flat terrain in the Vetren area, immediately north of the road between Vetren and Boshulya. The site is a low elevation enclosed by a largely buried fortification wall. The structures documented today are regarded as a Late Antique fortified settlement or as a castellum that took over the station.

Culture

The local Dervishovden festival in Vetren is associated with traditional rituals; the Dervishovden tradition includes masked performances, the Kvas ritual, and wedding customs.

The community center of Vetren preserves an urn containing soil from Lamartine's grave. Lamartine visited Vetren in 1832.

Regional Surroundings

In the broader regional context, Septemvri provides access to the Septemvri–Dobrinishte Rhodope narrow-gauge railway, a historic heritage railway line that connects mountain landscapes and provides access to natural and historical attractions from its stations and stops.

A proposed wine route to promote Vetrensko wine envisions the inclusion of Vetren's wineries.
