Culture

The Chitalishte Nov Zhivot cultural centre in Momchilgrad was founded on 19 February 1926. This community cultural centre houses the Momchilgrad Museum Collection; it has existed since 1969, comprises more than 500 exhibits and presents the archaeological heritage and mineral diversity of the area. The Naim Suleymanoglu house-museum in Momchilgrad is open to visitors.

The Momchilgrad Art Gallery opened in 1992. It preserves more than 280 works of painting, sculpture and graphic art and presents solo and group exhibitions by local and national artists.

The Church of St Tsar Boris-Mikhail I in the centre of Momchilgrad was built in 1938. Next to the church, an ossuary commemorates people who were killed in the Russo-Turkish and Balkan Wars. The St Spirit Chapel was restored in 1996 on the foundations of an older chapel, with donations from local Christians and Muslims. It is located in Momchil Yunak Forest Park; a town-wide gathering takes place there every year on its feast day.

The Old Mosque near the centre of Momchilgrad was built about 300 years ago and continues to be used uninterruptedly as an active place of prayer.

Nature

The Petrified Forest near Raven was formed when underwater volcanic lava buried a forest 25–30 million years ago. The trees remained upright beneath layers of ash. The Petrified Forest consists of upright fossilised trees exposed along approximately 200 metres of a gorge; it is described as a unique natural phenomenon.

A route of 868 painted steps connects Momchil Yunak Forest Park with Momchilgrad. The staircase route was renovated with lighting, railings, benches and rubbish bins.

Local

Near Momchilgrad lies the Chukovo rock-cult complex, featuring a huge lion figure carved from monolithic rock at the summit of Stramni Rid. Near Vryalo is the Sharapana, which is believed to have been used to process grapes into wine.

The Tourist Information Centre in Momchilgrad provides information about eco-trails, tourist routes, restaurants, accommodation and transport lines in the region, as well as local meat and dairy products, wine, honey and their producers.
