Kardzhali: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture

Saint George the Victorious is Kardzhali’s central active Orthodox church and a three-nave building from the first half of the 20th century. It is about a five-minute walk from the Regional History Museum. The medieval Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner is located in the Veselchane district on the right bank of the Arda and is designated as a cultural monument. The Central Mosque in Kardzhali is an active religious building and is also designated as a cultural monument.

History

Perperikon lies 20 kilometres northeast of Kardzhali on a rocky peak 470 metres high. Over the centuries, the site developed into a large cult complex carved into the rock, with hundreds of rooms. Perperikon can be reached by car via a paved road; a marked path from Bolyartsi leads directly to its tower.

Nature

The Stone Wedding is located about 4–5 kilometres from Kardzhali near Zimzelen. It is a five-hectare complex of volcanic rhyolite tuffs that are approximately 35–40 million years old. The rock formation can be visited year-round via a relatively easy route accessible to visitors.

The Arda flows through Kardzhali; the city’s terrain is characterised by low ridges and hills. The Kardzhali Reservoir is located near the city and has a 103.5-metre-high arch-gravity dam. The railway line from Dimitrovgrad to Kardzhali runs along the Studen Kladenets Reservoir. This scenic route is accessible by train or on foot.

Prostor Park has picnic areas as well as paved and illuminated walking paths; cycling, rollerblading and riding scooters are also possible there. It contains an adventure ropes course for children.
