Culture
Gabrovnitsa celebrates its St Demetrius feast on 26 October; it includes a Divine Liturgy. The village parish church is dedicated to St Demetrius. Gabrovnitsa also holds a village festival connected with spiritual life and the preservation of intangible values and local tradition.
The Asen Yosifov–1926 community centre is used for seasonal folkloric and cultural activities, including Lazarovden customs, the Kumichene ritual, Easter workshops and themed exhibitions. The Kamila custom has been presented in Gabrovnitsa and at festivals in Pernik and Yambol. The Asen Yosifov–1926 community centre also has a Kukeri group called Kamila with 35 participants and runs a children’s folk dance ensemble.
A local naming tradition connects Gabrovnitsa with a former well and a dense hornbeam forest near Suhi dol.
Education and History
The school in Gabrovnitsa is described as one of the oldest schools in the Municipality of Montana and as the largest outside the city. According to local school history, the school was founded in 1866; this information is based on recollections. In 1931, a new school building was opened in Gabrovnitsa after it had been built through voluntary work and local funds. According to tradition, the first classroom was supposedly located in the village smithy.
Events
The community centre and the local school regularly hold the educational competition “Know Your People and Language” on 24 May. The 24 May programme also includes an open-air concert with songs and dances. On 1 June, mass recitation, outdoor sports and drawing on asphalt are part of the community centre’s programme.
The community centre has a tradition for Earth Day in which flowers are planted and the grounds are cleaned together with school volunteers. The summer programme has already included outdoor sports, drawing activities, animation shows for children, board games and storytelling in the open air in the park. The institution also lists a modern dance group with 10 pupils. A National Reading Marathon, held on 23 April for World Book Day, was also associated with the community centre.
