Sinemorets: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Sinemorets is associated with the Veleka River estuary and the nearby protected areas of the Veleka Estuary and Silistar. These areas support rare animal and plant species.

Nature

The Veleka River Estuary protected area covers 1,511 hectares. It includes the estuary and the lower basin within the areas of Ahtopol, Brodilovo and Sinemorets. Rare and protected plants grow in the protected area, including the endangered yellow water lily, which is designated as the only such occurrence in Strandzha Nature Park. Above the Veleka protected area runs the Via Pontica bird migration corridor; the lower stretches of the river are used by birds for overwintering or as a stopover.

The Veleka is navigable from its mouth to the Tsarskoto Kladenche area over a distance of 8 kilometres; this section is described as suitable for water tourism. The protected area has several eco-trails and hiking trails, including the Geological Trail of the Natural Museum of Palaeovolcanology, the Veleka River Estuary–Tsarskoto Kladenche area–Brodilovo village route and the trail along the left bank of the Veleka.

Culture and History

The “Fortified Ruler’s Residence” near Sinemorets is the residence of a Thracian ruler on a natural elevation at the mouth of the Veleka. The site is protected by a surrounding wall and a tower. Archaeological finds show that the fortified ruler’s residence was inhabited during the Late Hellenistic period, probably by a local Thracian ruler involved in ore extraction and trade in Strandzha.

The fortified ruler’s residence is visible and accessible by car and on foot; when entering Sinemorets, visitors turn left. Underwater investigations in Potamya Bay north of Sinemorets uncovered pottery from the 5th–4th centuries BC and from the Middle Ages, as well as anchors and lead fittings from an ancient ship.

Activities

Boat trips on the upper and lower Veleka depart from the river landing immediately after the bridge before Sinemorets. The upper trip goes as far as Tsarskoto Kladenche, where there is a picnic shelter. The Sinemorets–Veleka Estuary–Ahtopol route is approximately 8.2 kilometres long, takes about 3 hours 30 minutes and is suitable for mountain biking.

Sinemorets also offers banana boat rides, jet ski rental, trips by horse and pony, boat trips on the Veleka, as well as trails for hikers and cyclists.

Cuisine

Restaurants and other food establishments in Sinemorets serve seafood and Bulgarian national cuisine.
