Culture and History

The Dimitar Polyanov House Museum is located in Karnobat’s only surviving urban-style house from the National Revival period. It presents the traditional culture of the Karnobat area, covering topics such as livelihoods, crafts, festivals, customs and traditional clothing.

The Karnobat Clock Tower was built in 1875 and reflects the prosperity of the city’s artisan and merchant community. The Sinanbey Hammam is an Ottoman-Turkish monument from the 15th century and the only identified 15th-century building in present-day southeastern Bulgaria.

The Markeli Fortress was the site of Khan Kardam’s decisive victory over the Byzantine Emperor Constantine VI on 20 July 792. It is located 7.5 kilometres west of Karnobat and is described as a significant early Byzantine city and a powerful fortress of the First Bulgarian Empire. The fortress also contains a multi-layered Christian complex with an 11th-century cross-domed church, mosaics, marble sculptures and frescoes.

Wine

The Minkov Brothers Winery offers wine tastings and guided tours featuring wines made from its own vineyards in the Karnobat region. The tours include visits to the vineyards and underground tunnels where wine matures in oak barrels. Two museum areas are dedicated to the history of the Minkov family’s winemaking and the wine tradition of the Karnobat region.

The production of wine and rakia is described as part of the history and livelihoods of the local population in the Karnobat region. Vinprom Karnobat cultivates the grape varieties Tamyanka, Dimyat, Rubin, Mavrud, Misket, Pamid, Uni Blanc and Rkatsiteli.

Nature

The protected area of Lalikoto in the land of Venets is a habitat of the endemic Urumov’s tulip. Eight globally threatened bird species and 63 species of European or national importance occur in Karnobat Municipality.
