Gurtis – Ski Lifts, Mountain Trails and History
Accommodation in Gurtis
Gurtis combines winter sports experiences, scenic mountain trails and a remarkable history. If your travel group has different interests, you can combine days of skiing, hikes and cultural discoveries here. When looking for a holiday apartment in Gurtis, it is therefore worth deciding first what you want the main focus of your trip to be.
Skiing around the three lifts
The Gurtis ski area has three lifts located in close proximity to one another. The Baliefer Lift, also commonly known as the Baby Lift, is suitable for first attempts on skis. This gives the ski area different starting points for a winter day, without requiring you to limit your plans to a single activity.
In winter, the Liftstüble is operated at the Gurtiser Lädele. The Gurtiser Lädele itself has been run as a place to stop for refreshments and a meeting point for young and old since 2018. These two details are useful points of orientation on site and provide an additional point of reference for a winter stay besides skiing.
Hikes with different character
Gurtis also reveals itself as a starting point for a variety of hiking ideas outside winter. One hike leads from Alpencamping Nenzing via Latz through the attractive Galinatal valley to Gurtis. Those who would like to discover historic paths through woodland landscapes can choose the Herrenweg. It is an ascent from Gurtis to Alpe Gamp and leads through dense mountain forests.
The traverse of the Hohe Köpfe from Gurtis leads along an alpine trail with secured sections. Another route runs from Bazora via Bazoraalpe to Gurtisspitze and back to Bazora. Gurtisspitze itself is a prominent mountain viewpoint. A hike to Gurtis also opens up impressive views of the Drei Schwestern and the striking, terraced shape of the Goppaschrofen.
If you are planning several hikes, compare the routes described according to their landscapes and trail types. This creates a travel plan that takes different experiences into account rather than focusing on just one attraction.
Church, Walser history and local tradition
The present-day Kuratienkirche Gurtis zu unserer lieben Frau Mariä Heimsuchung has existed since 1791. Walser history is also part of the village’s identity: the arrival of this population group in the 14th and 15th centuries gave Gurtis a major boost and shaped life in the hamlet of Nenzing.
A special episode concerns the Gurtis church choir. During the time of Chaplain Battlog, the choir was so well known that the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, Franz Albert Eder, interrupted his journey and walked to Gurtis to hear it. Stories like these make the cultural character of the village tangible without limiting your stay to a single theme.
The right holiday apartment for your travel plans
A holiday apartment in Gurtis can suit a variety of holiday plans: in winter, the ski area, the three lifts and the Liftstüble take centre stage; for hikers, the routes to Alpe Gamp, through the Galinatal valley or to Gurtisspitze are key attractions. Those interested in history can include the Kuratienkirche, Walser heritage and the church choir in their personal daily plans. Choose your accommodation according to the mix of experiences you are looking for, and use Gurtis as a destination for active, scenic and cultural discoveries.
