Weiler at the foot of the Freschenstock
Accommodation in Weiler
Weiler lies on the eastern edge of the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley, at the foot of the Freschenstock. A fen, stream ravines and mixed deciduous forests give the landscape distinctive natural features; the parish church, local music and historical traditions add cultural history. Nature watching, woodland walks and architectural history can therefore be considered as different themes for your stay.
Fen, stream ravines and mixed deciduous forest
The Hahnenberg fen lies southeast of the village center in a shallow hollow on a gently north-facing slope between Hahnenberg and Hündler. The elongated litter meadow is about 30 to 40 meters wide and follows a meltwater channel. On June 18, 2020, the fen was home to an exceptionally valuable range of species. Purple moor grass and fragrant leek grow in the drier areas; only a few individual Siberian irises, a highly endangered species, remain. The composition of species may change over time.
The Klausbach ravine above the village is cut into soft ground and characterized by woodland along the stream. The Ratzbach gallery forest is a remnant of floodplain forest at the southern end of the Weiler meadows, about one kilometer southeast of the village center. The Ratzbach's Kesselschlucht ravine is deeply incised and features a remarkable waterfall. The Weiler-Halden-Fraxern mixed deciduous forests include slope forests north of state road L 69 (Fraxner Straße), around the Altmontfort ruins and at Rüthischrofen in Weiler-Halden; the woodland continues toward Fraxern.
Hiking and exercise
Pfaffenkeller is a ravine-like narrow passage in the Loresch mixed deciduous forest, along the marked hiking trail and forest nature trail from Weiler to Röthis. If you plan to take this route, check the current signs on site. The Ganta fitness trail offers a different kind of exercise: it is located in the Ganta-Loresch woodland in the municipalities of Weiler and Röthis and runs for about two kilometers through the forest in the direction of Viktorsberg. Its 13 stations provide varied strength, endurance and coordination training. The trail paths are not suitable for strollers. As route conditions may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.
Church, music and local history
Weiler Parish Church was rebuilt in 1875–1876 to designs by Viennese cathedral architect Friedrich von Schmidt and consecrated in 1876. Friedrich Schmidt also designed the side altars, which Kob carved in 1880–1882. The church's construction and furnishings thus reveal two successive chapters in its history.
Since 1876, Weiler Church Choir has focused on classical and contemporary church music. The parish offers a varied program based on the church year and holds benefit concerts to raise donations for people in need. Individual events may vary, so check the relevant dates before your visit.
Hanenberg-Schlössle and the Alt-Montfort ruins are among Weiler's historically significant buildings. A historical account relates that as early as the 17th century, on July 22, people from Vorarlberg and nearby Switzerland set out for Ebnit to pray. Weiler Distillery also represents a long local tradition: it has been operating for over 100 years and is now run as an association with a mobile distillery.
