Offenhausen appeals to travellers who want to combine cultural history, distinctive local attractions and trails through a varied landscape. Between historical memories, viewpoints and regional discoveries, the village presents a diverse picture. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether your trip should focus primarily on historical impressions, walking and Nordic walking experiences, or a longer excursion into the Wels-Land district.

Experience Local History at Special Destinations

A prominent historical landmark is the parish church of St. Stephen. It is considered possibly the most significant market church in Upper Austria built in Renaissance forms. The wash trough is also located on the market square and is a destination along the Nordic walking trail. Those interested in memorial sites will find the war memorial, erected in 1928, at the market fountain. It commemorates 36 soldiers killed and 4 soldiers missing in the First World War and is crowned by a statue of Saint Christopher. The academic sculptor Podolak created the figure from artificial stone.

The Kaiser Franz Josef Jubilee Oak is also part of the village’s history. It was planted in 1908 by the citizens of the market town of Offenhausen in honour of Emperor Franz Josef. The theatre group of the local heritage society brings cultural life to the village and is known beyond the municipality’s borders. In Offenhausen, you can therefore get to know not only individual buildings and monuments, but also incorporate historical and cultural connections into your travel planning.

Trails, Views and Regional Special Features

For a break along the way, Christopherplatzl beside Egelsee Pond is an inviting option. A table and benches along the Christophorus Trail invite you to rest; the spot also offers a magnificent view. The Panorama Trail focuses on information: Information panels explain the special features of the Grünbach, the mills once powered by the stream and the renaturation measures.

The Nordic walking trail leads via Vornholz to the Maria Hilf Chapel, which was built as early as 1742. Another special feature can be found along the Holzweg: “‘s hamische Gaderl” displays a view of the Grünbach Valley and the Welser Heide in a window or picture frame. Offenhausen’s legend “‘s hamische Gaderl” is engraved in the frame. Such specific destinations give a trip different focal points: You can alternate between historic buildings, landscape information, viewpoints and regional storytelling traditions without turning every trail into the same kind of excursion.

Planning Historical and Weather-Dependent Activities

Würting Castle offers another way to engage with history. It was first mentioned in 814 as a Romanesque estate (“actum ad wirtingen”). In 1923, Richard Nikolaus Coudenhove-Kalergi wrote his programmatic book “Pan-Europa” there about his ideas for a united Europe. However, one point is important for your planning: Würting Castle is currently closed by order of the building authorities and therefore cannot be visited. Its historical significance can thus be regarded as a thematic reason for travelling, not as a current visitor attraction.

The Offenhausen outdoor pool is open only in good weather. If you choose a holiday apartment for a stay with various ideas for day trips, you should take this weather-dependent information into account. For activities that are less dependent on the weather, the local information focuses primarily on history, monuments, cultural connections and the trails described above. The approximately 160-kilometre Wels-Land Circuit connects all 24 municipalities in the Wels-Land district as well as the city of Wels, broadening your view of the region.
