In Tiefgraben, the landscape, hiking destinations and building history offer different ways to shape your stay. Mondseeberg draws the eye to panoramic views; chapels and the Kolomanskirche provide cultural destinations along the way. At the Mondseer Rauchhaus open-air museum, meanwhile, a distinctive type of farmhouse takes centre stage. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether views, hiking, swimming or historical insights will shape your holiday.

Panoramic Views from Mondseeberg

The Mondseeberg area in Tiefgraben is known for its panoramic views. Since autumn 2019, the Kulmspitz observation tower has stood at the summit of Mondseeberg, offering panoramic views of Lake Mondsee. This gives the landscape a clear focal point: views from the mountain and across the lake are among the features that define Tiefgraben.

Hiking Trails and Chapels

Numerous hiking trails run through Tiefgraben, including routes to the Kolomanskirche, considered the oldest wooden church in Europe. Six marked hiking trails lead to the Radstatt Chapel. The chapel stands hidden in the forest on the ridge of Mondseeberg, at an elevation of 994 m above sea level. The number of trails and the specific elevation give this destination a distinctive profile among the area's hiking destinations.

Other chapels also represent different cultural connections. The Ritzinger Forest Chapel is a wooden chapel in the forest along the hiking trail to Kolomannsberg; it was already there around 1900. The Heilig-Geist wayside shrine is a stop on the Rogation procession from Seegruber to Radstatt. Hikers often stop to rest at the Frischling Chapel. Each of these places has its own connection to trails, the forest or religious tradition; they need not be viewed as part of a single route.

A Glimpse into Historic Building Methods

The Mondseer Rauchhaus open-air museum showcases a Mittertennhof farmhouse built using log construction and first mentioned in 1416. In this type of farmhouse, the living quarters, stable and barn are combined under one roof. There is no chimney: smoke escapes through the roof to dry the grain stored in the upper storey. This building shows how living and working areas were brought together in one type of farmhouse and what purpose the smoke outlet served. The farm and open-air museum also offers workshops, including ones on making historic fences.

Cycling and Swimming

The surrounding hills of Tiefgraben are accessible via forest roads and hiking trails. Tiefgraben offers mountain biking, e-biking, road cycling and trekking by bicycle. Alongside hiking, visitors can therefore choose from several types of cycling as distinct activities. Those more interested in discovering culture and architecture can focus on the historic sites mentioned above; those seeking outdoor exercise will find a range of hiking and cycling activities.

Another option for a stay with a waterside focus is the Tiefgraben bathing area, a grassy bathing spot on Lake Irrsee. Views from Mondseeberg, hiking trails, building history, cycling and swimming each offer a different focus. Tiefgraben is accessible via the A1 motorway and the Mondsee exit; you can also take this travel information into account when choosing your location.
